My Mum

Martins Gate, a quaint cottage on the old Colchester road, is where my mum was born. There was no water, electricity, no inside toilet. I spent many happy hours there with my grandparents, playing in the fields at the back of the house. I was bathed in a tin bath in front of a roaring fire, the water was from a water butt and heated up on the Aga. The toilet was a shed at the bottom of the garden.
I spent many hours running acroos the field to the priory, playing with the deer in the woods and picking the bluebells to take home for my grandmother. The lighting was oil lamps, with the beams on the ceiling it was so cosy. Every bonfire night my brother and I along with our cousins would congregrate at Martins Gate for many a memorable Guy Fawkes. My nan would make toffee apples and lots of other goodies for us children. I remember my cousin Geoff having a dog called Shep and also some chickens.
I was in my twenties when Martins Gate had the electricity and a phone put on.
My mum married her childhood sweetheart, my dad, in St Peter's and St Paul's Church on September 8th 1945. I was born in November 1947 and was christened at the same church. My brother David was born in 1950 and my brother Paul was born in 1959. My lovely parents had a happy marriage which was taken away from them in 1977 when my beautiful mum died suddenly.  Because our family home was in Kirby Cross my mum's funeral was in Walton-on-Naze, but she is now resting in St Osyth, her birth place. Sadly my dad died last year and a joint request of dad and myself was to have his funeral at the church where he and my mum began their life-long journey together and to be together for ever in their resting place.
Although I have stated my memory from 1957 my parents told me from a very young age I spent many happy times at Martins Gate.
I often drive past Martins Gate and have noticed many changes, but for me my childhood memories of that wondeful little cottage will never fade.
It has changed so much and I hope the people who live there now will have many happy years there.

RE: RE: My Mum

Hi there. I just read your little story. Excellent. I actually live in No 1 Martinsgate Cottage. I am not sure whether you are refering to my cottage or No 2.

RE: RE: My Mum

Were the Martins Gate cottages opposite the Shanglia Caravan camp? I grew up with my friend Geoff Last (b1945 d2010) who lived opposite the camp with his mother and grandmother. I hope I am talking about the correct location.

RE: RE: My Mum

Hi Alan
Thanks for your email dated 24th October via Francis Firth titled My Mum.
In reply you do have the right location, and yes Geoff my cousin was brought up by his mother and our grandmother who lived opposite the said caravan camp.

I vaguely remember meeting you many, many moons ago at Martins Gate, and then again at Geoffs's wedding, and wondering if you were his best man. I would like to keep in contact with you Alan if that's OK with you, so that maybe we can meet up and chat about old times and your connection with my family. I'm writing a book in memory of my MUM and DAD and as MUM was a Toosey girl born and bred it would be nice to get some feedback from outsiders of my family and your friendship with Geoff to include in my book.

I often visit St. Osyth the resting place of my Mum and Dad so if you live in the village or near there perhaps we could some day arrange to meet. Could you please reply to my personal email address or failing that reply to my postal address.

My email address: Suzette@mizen8234.freeserve.co.uk
My Postal address: Suzette Mizen. 32 Barrington Road, Colchester, Essex. CO2 7RW.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best Wishes
Suzette.

To Alan Beales
Hi Alan
In answer to your E-Mail of 24th October (sorry for being so late) Yes you are talking about the right location, Martins Gate was opposite the said Caravan Camp, and Geoff Last my cousin and was brought up by his mother and our grandmother.
I seem to remember many moons ago meeting a friend of Geoff's named Alan perhaps it was you. Were you Geoff's best man at his wedding to Rita?.
I haven't seen Geoff for many years, are you still in contact with him Alan.

It's so nice to hear from someone who has had connections with my Mum's family, perhaps if you are living in St. Osyth and if you agree, we could meet up for a good old chat about past times. I often visit St. Osyth as it is the resting place of my parents, and my husband and myself often enjoy a Sunday lunch at the Kings Arms.

I would like to hear from you Alan and enclose my personal e-mail address as follows
Suzette@mizen8234.freeserve.co.uk
If you would prefer sending a letter my address is
Suzette Mizen, 32 Barrington Road, Colchester, Essex. CO2 7RW
If it's OK with you Alan either way would be nice to hear from you.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours
Sincerely
Suzette Mizen.

RE: RE: My Mum

Hi Suzette. Do you remember the Coates famly? My cousins lived in Colchester Road, and I live in Spring Road with my mum and dad. I miss the old beach as I spent most of my childhood there in the summer, my mum ran a shop further up the beach, she worked for Mr and Mrs Bull who used to live in Hill House next to the Flag. Regards, Jane Jones
