Hillside Standon
My parents (Harold and Peggy Warden) bought Hillside (which was the miller's house, the mill fell down after the First World War) and moved my sister (Rosemary) and I from Surrey in April 1951, I was then 7 years old. Later that Month it snowed, cutting off Dark Hill and therefore Wellpond Green. I enjoyed Standon School, in particular the teachings of Mr E N Butler who taught me Chess and an appreciation of Medieval buildings and churches. I went on three separate school journeys to Great Yarmouth, Cheddar, and the Dove Valley. I kept in touch with Anne and "Billy" after they retired to the Isle of Wight until their respective deaths. I will always be grateful for Mr. Butler's help in getting me to Hertford Grammar. Remembering Our School Church
St Mary's was a lovely church and I remember exploring the grave yard which went up a hill at the back accompanied by friends of my class. I remember the vicar 'Ross Sage' and when he used to visit the school. My sister and I were both married at this church so it has happy memories along with the school and village. We lived at Wellpond Green about a mile away.

School Days
I attended the local school. I now live in Tasmania, Australia. Seeing this photo of my school brings back so many happy memories. Mrs Butler was my headmisstress and I remained in contact with her even when they retired to the Isle of Wight. Lyn Sexton was my friend and I lived in Town Farm Crescent. Also I remember having a friend called Sharon Debnam. I also remember after seeing these photos going to the ford with my friends David and Peter. So many happy memories.
I Lived in Standon from The 1950s Onwards Till 1969 & Then Came Back!!
My dad ran the butchers shop in the High Street from 1951-1969, Victor John Ward. I went to the school at the far end of the High Street (now residential). Headmaster was Mr Eric Norman Butler. I remember May Day, and dancing in the High Street ... more memories than I can write! School journeys? Sports days on the rec...Westwoods newsagents....Catons shop...Emertons shop...Walkers baker...Mr and Mrs Drage in the Post Office, later Dorothy and Frank Pearson... I have loads of childhood memories and of the village people from then.
The Picketts of Standon
The majority of my father's family lived in and around Standon from 1600 onwards and one of them was the Sexton of St. Mary's and another was the innkeeper of The Three Horseshoes at Farnham in 1881. My Grandfather was born in the Three Horsehoes. Does anyone have any connections with the Pickett family?
Memories of Hertfordshire
1954 And 1955
I was stationed here for the year above. Last time I visited was maybe 1972 or so. The headquarters company there had been torn down and nothing left but the foundation. The English folks were VERY gracious to the American servicemen although sometimes we did not deserve it. I recall Albert Tayler (of Puckeridge) just up the road. He had his VW bus and took us various places of neet as a taxi service. I did see Albert on that trip back in the early 70's.
Evacuees
I was evacuated to Bury Farm, to a lovely family, the Oakleys. It was one of the happiest times of my life and I still visit, although most of the family have moved away some still remain. The village has changed after all this time but still has so many happy memoriers for me that I will always love it. I am now in my seventy seventh year and recently went to a 90 birthday party of Doris Tott who is the eldest daughter of the lady & gent I stayed with (Dollie & Charlie Oakley). Another girl was evacuated with me, Dorothy Perry, nee Coney, and we met up again at the party. We both recognised each other. I cannot thank the Oakley family enough for all they did for me and my family. I shall continue to visit Braughing for as long as I am able and look forward to the trip . A Good Time in Much Hadham
I spent about one year in Much Hadham as German prisoner of war, 1946 till July 1947, working for the Hertfordshire War Agricultural Executice Committee; I specially was engaged in our camp labour office as clerk, under Mr. Wooley and later Mr. Smolenski, two wonderful men. We enjoyed already a lot of liberty, and I really loved this little village, which I visited once again in the late sixties, when I still discovered some remainders of one of our old Nissen huts! These months in Hertfordshire had an immense positive influence on all my further life, especially when I then worked in out of school civic education. Thank you, Much Hadham!

Childhood
I remember spending the first twelve years of my life in Haltwick, we lived in Sunnny Side Cottage, my brother and I would go down past the pub to get water from the well and we would play in the woods and fields. We moved to Dane End when I was twelve, it was much the same just a nice peaceful place to grow up in. I sadly moved away and only came back to bury my father in Little Mundon Church some thirty years ago I and I haven't been back since. From the pictures I have seen it changes very little I will always rember going to the pictures in the village hall, making gokarts out of old prams and riding them down the hill from Gladstone Road, going up to the old chalk pit where they dumped lorry loads of army helmets it would keep us happy for hours, I would go to the orchard that used to belong to Billy Ives and... Morley Cottage
I remember Wareside so well. I lived at Morley Cottage just outside the village. I went there in 1937 with my parents - my father Jim McGowan and Mother Elizabeth.They both worked at Fanhams Hall for Lady Brocket. My mother then worked for Mrs. Baird at Reeves Green in the 1940's and then went as a dinner lady at Wareside C of E school - where I went until 1947 then onto Ware Grammar School. I have many memories of Whist Drives in the Village and dances and happy memories of VE Day in the village.I see that some else mentions the Temperance Hall and my parents knew the family well who lived there - their name was Godley. We too used to go to Hogham Wood to pick primroses and bluebells (not allowed now!) and then of course the railway line was still in action.
