Childhood Visits to Stanford Le Hope
My uncle George Boyce lived in a flat-roofed white-painted house on the corner of an unmade side road not far from the church at the 'T' junction at the end of the road. He and my uncle Bill Boyce built the cinema that stood back from the road between the white house and the church and on the same side of the road. I was only 5 - 8 years old when I visited Stanford and cannot remember any other details. My mum and I used to travel there from Pitsea on a double decker bus. Uncle used to take me to the cinema and I was allowed to watch the films showing from the projection room. The cinema was later converted to a Bingo hall after both uncles had emigrated.

RE: RE: Childhood Visits to Stanford Le Hope
Mike - The flat roofed house you are describing sounds like it is the one on the corner of Manor Road and Corringham Road. There are several between there and Scratton Road built in the old 'Moderne' style. Manor Road was not adopted and made up until 1968. The old Regent Cinema was indeed turned into a bingo hall and then a snooker club. The snooker club closed about three years ago and the premises then stood empty. There were plans to turn it into a private members club that foundered on local opposition but it has now been extensively refurbished and reopened as a dance studio.

RE: RE: Childhood Visits to Stanford Le Hope
I think Peter Watson is right, the flat-roofed white-painted house is almost certainly 53 Corringham Road, on the corner of Manor Road. My family lived in it from 1963 to 1972. I emigrated to Canada in 1966, but on my yearly visits to England I always go to look at the old place. Sadly it is no longer white, but a horrible grey pebbledash. It's not right! Best wishes, Kevin Sheerstone.
