Castle School, Stanhope

Well, I have been reading some articles posted on this website, about Castle School in Stanhope from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Well, I was in Castle School from 1958 - 1962. I was in because I was a badden, lol, just like those who have posted messages on here. When I was driven up the driveway to the main entrance, I looked, and thought "This is not a school, it's Colditz". Reading some of the letters posted on here from various people, it sounds as though it was a tough place, well believe me it hasn't changed since I was in. I was in Crawley House, all the houses were named after hills around Stanhope. I did 3 and a half years before I got to go home back to Doncaster, but don't think i could have coped with 6 years, as someone had said in their letter they posted.
I did do a great escape once from the school, didn't get far, ended up in a back street, and one of the cooks saw me, so I went back. I got into trouble for that. Back then, if you got into trouble, you were made to polish the wooden floors on your hands and knees, I was dong that one time, and I stopped for a rest. When one of the teachers caught me, he told the head, who hit me with a walking stick. So yes, I agree with some of you, they would have been prosecuted if it wasn't in back then. Yes we went camping to Whitby back then, we were in a field just up from the cemetery, and when it was foggy, you got the foghorn going off.
My parents only visited me once whilst I was there. My Uncle John came with them, he brought me a fishng rod and we went into the River Wear, trying to catch little fish. The day came when I was sent home, and a Mr McTavish, one of the teachers, took me home to Doncaster.
Well I went to see Castle School today, Saturday 20 June 2009. It's all flats now, and you can't see the big field from the top, because all of the trees and shrubbery have grown to a great height. I looked into the courtyard where we played, and it brought back memories straight away. The toilet block burnt down last year, but Stanhope hasn't changed much, except for the tourist information centre and cafe across the road from the school. But I must admit, my time in there changed me. I had a few jobs when I got back home, then joined the Army in 1968 for 12 years. But it was nice to see the old school again. If anyone was in Castle school way, way, way back then and would like to share messages on-line feel free to email me at  dave2948h@hotmail.com.

RE: RE: Castle School, Stanhope

I was in Castle School from 1961 to 1964. It was good at times and also bad. Mr Bowls was the head, and didn't we know it. I had the walking stick on many a Friday morning after assembly. I cannot remember any names from people there. 12 months after leaving I went in the Merchant Navy on the catering side, but had a car crash in 1969 which ended my career. It must have all changed now, being flats and all.

I am now convinced that the Mr Bowles I knew must have been a Jekyll and Hyde character as the man I knew was a gentleman in every sense of the word.

RE: RE: Castle School, Stanhope

I was at Stanhope Castle just before my 10th birthday in 1944 and left in May 1949 then went to a hostel in Newcastle. The four house were named after rivers, Derwent, Tees, Tyne and Wear, I was in Tees house. I was sent there for for not going to school. I do remember some teachers, Mr Jones music teacher, Mr Pearts who was in charge of the gardens across the road from the main entrence to the school, Miss Foster and Miss Wearmouth, two very nice teachers, Mr Bowler was the only teacher who caned me, also I left with a perforated ear drum. Some of you may remember me singing 'Ten Green Bottles' on stage as an old man with a very crooked walking stick which I found whilst out walking, I also recited a poem 'The Girl on the Stairs'. If anybody remembers me I would be keen to hear from them.

I too was at Stanhope Castle School, my only crime was I ran away from home many times. The biggest bully in that school was Bowls. Next Maddison, next Pearson, next Wheeler, next Jones. I sufferd at the hands of these bastards. I was beaten up so many times I have lost count. The reason they beat little boys up is they could not hit back. They ruled by fear. But once the little boy grew into a man they did not want to fight. I went back to Stanhope many times. If any of these brave gentlemen saw me they would dart back into the school. I was beaten up many times by Bowls. These bastards should have been brought to book. for what they did, but someone higher up was protecting them. I cannot forget, and I will not forgive. I am over 71 years of age but I still remember everything that happened to me in that school. All of them bullies at that school are dead but they will not rest in peace. I have made sure of that by my faith. Bob Henderson. My email is: roberthendi@yahoo.com if anyone wants to get in touch.

RE: RE: Castle School, Stanhope

To all the young lads that were in that place, I know too what you all went through. I was there from my 10th birthday in 1962 till 1967 for not going to school. I too was at the receiving end of many good hidings off Bowles the head, he was a nutcase, he would hit you with anything he could find. I remember a lad was playing cricket, he broke a stump, and he had to keep that stump with him for a month, go to bed with it, shower with it... My brother got a perforated ear off Mr Maddison, the teacher of Horsly House, he would grab you by your hair and slap you very hard on the side of you face, and he had big hands too. I once broke my ankle running down the steep steps down to the play barn to give Mr Melady the keys to open it, when they got me to the headmaster's office he give me the care for breaking my ankle. As someone said, they will all be dead now, but the people of Stanhope never knew what was going on in that place, if it had happened today thy would have been put in prison.
