My 6 Years at Stanhope Castle
I have often wondered if I should one day be able to say what happened to me as a child during my 6 year stay at Stanhope. It was like living hell, yes the masters would have been prosecuted for abuse had it happened today. It was every bit as bad as the previous writer described and much worse. I once couldn't read what a master had written on the blackboard. For this I was slammed against the blackboard then told to circuit the lawn outside. I see that the very same weeping willow is still in the middle of it. I ran underneath it and prayed to God to make him stop beating me. This punnishment was repeated 4 times. I was covered in blood from my ears and nose. Nothing was done and you did not dare to complain. Another of their favourite punishments was to tie your fingers to your bootlaces, or they would put you in a corner, remove your trousers and beat you till you were raw. There are probably a lot more stories such as mine out there., and it would be interesting to hear about them.
The long-term efect on me was that my handwriting went from excellent to less than poor. My ability to read was impaired along with my spelling abilities. These were most definitely the worst years of my life. I live a happy life today but will never forgive or forget the people responsible for the years that began it.
This letter was written for me on my behalf by a friend. I came from Nottingham - if anybody should remember me, please email me:

RE: RE: My 6 Years at Stanhope Castle
Hello Michael ,
I read your sad and disturbing memories of your period at the Stanhope School, sadly I have to say that what appears to be a chapter from a Dickens novel is all too true and witnessed by myself during at stay at the school in 1967.
I was a student attending a Home Office Training Course for residential Social Workers on placement at the Stanhope. The Headmaster being Mr Bowls ran a regime of mature bullies that gave cruelty preferance over care to children and at times young members of staff.
Unlike you Michael, I was in a position to report my views to a higher authority which I was assured would investigate and deal with the matters of mental and physical abuse that affected the school population. Mr Bowls and the 'Tiger' got their deserts.

Hi Michael, I was in there 1962 till 1967 in a house called Horsley. A Mr Maddison was in charge of that house. You were not the only one to suffer, not by a long way. I remember a lad one day playing cricket, he broke a stump, the headmaster (he was called Bowls) he beat that lad with stick and hands, he also made him sleep, shower, walk around with that stump for a month. My brother was in there with me, one winter's day he and I were caught throwing snowballs at each other, the head caught us, he made us throw snowballs at each other outside his window for four hours, because we did not stop he came out and beat us with his stick.
Take care mate.

Hi Kenny Melvin, I was in Bewdley House in 1966-1968, it was a horrible place, I was always getting bullied by the evil staff. I remember Jackie Bowles the headmaster, he would have been in jail nowadays for some of the things he did to children. Do you remember Mr Wheeler, he always used to nip your face and say it was a bit of jam. I can remember you, Kenny, when you were in Horsley House. Get in touch, mate.
