THE CASTLE SCHOOL
I was at the Castle School in Stanhope from 1975-77, I was in Bewdley House and in Big Raby dorm, to me I have no good memories about the place to be honest. I thought it was an evil place, if the law was then as it is today many of the staff would have got a prison sentence after the violence went on there, I am only being honest. At the age of 14 I arrived at the Castle School at about 6pm, had some food, I think it was food, and then I was put straight to work polishing floors, the floor polish was put on so thick it was difficult to polish as you would be on hands and knees, if you stopped the staff would walkacross the front line and stand on your fingers. I remember one boy who hated Cauliflower Cheese and was made to eat it and he was sick, then he was made to eat his own vomit. I was feeling unwell and finding it difficult to move, I was clouted across my head and ended up with a perforated eardrum. I remember a freezing January evening, getting a shower before bed, the shower water was freezing and I found it difficult to get in the shower, I was hit several times across my back with carbolic soap wrapped up in a towel until I was in the shower. I was at this school for my own protection from my step-father's abuse by Social Services and this is what I had to face. Today the memories are still there and I feel anger over this place. I recieved split head stitches in my head, broken nose, black eyes, cracked ribs and this was done just from the staff there, , and what really went on there when there were young boys from the age of 9 years old up to 16 years old. not mension staff names those who were there will remember. (NOT A GOOD PLACE TO BE.)

RE: RE: THE CASTLE SCHOOL
Hi, I am Kenny Melvin, I was in Stanhope School from 10 yers old, 1962, till 1967 when I came out of that hell-hole. Yes, what they did to us them they would have been jailed for today. That headmaster then was called Bowles, he was a nutter, and I mean that, if you did not look him in the eye and opened your mouth when speaking to him he would forcefully rip your mouth open. The things that went on in there, no one would believe today. I was in Horsley House, a Mr Maddison was in charge of that house. He liked to grab you by the hair and hold your face to one side and slap you as hard as he could full force across your face. My brother was in there the same time as me, he ended up with a busted eardrum off him. I remember the camping out in Whitby, we used to dress up all in green. I did not like goosegogs that were grown over in our gardens but we got them every day for our dinner while we were camping out in Whitby, they used to make me sick, but the head used to force them down me even when I was sick. I would like to chat to you again over this. Take care mate.

RE: RE: THE CASTLE SCHOOL
Hi Kenneth, your story moved me so much. I too was at The Castle, 1963 to 1969. It was brutal. We all lived in constant fear. On many occasions I was beaten serverely, one time I was caned by Mr Bowls 15 times (counted by a mate), I got about six on my backside and the rest on my back and legs and not with a cane suppled by the Home Office but a walking stick. My brother like you was also there, he is still very bitter. We were not angels but the punishment for stepping out of line was horrendous, I was caught swearing once and had to bite on a bar of soap for 3 hours (White Windsor), your tounge and lips swell up, and you keep swallowing. I remember so much about the place, you call it a hell-hole, the sad thing is you are right. It should have been the happiest of years, unfortunately they were my saddest. It was about 1967 and a friend showed me a photo in the Observer magazine, it was of a boy's bottom, he had received 6 of the best from a headmaster at the school he went to. The head was sent to prison for 6 month for doing that - but it was nothing in comparison to what we got at The Castle. The next time Mr Bowls beat me I got my friend (G.B) to take a photo in the shower of my beatings. I took the roll of film as I was planning to run off that night and take the film to my dad, at 10pm Mr Bowls and another member of staff stripped my bed and found the film. I then received my most severe beating. Sorry Kenneth, had to get it off my chest. Take care.
