What A Place to Send Anybody
Crawley House, not a very nice place. There were four houses, all the same, all horror houses full of angry young lads. I was 12 when I went there and felt 30 when I left but was only 16. What a hole that place was. I ended up in DC and Borstal and that was while I was still there. The beatings I could take and did, but watching other lads getting beatings, that is what sticks in my mind. The staff made these young lads fight each other for their own fun, what a bunch of a..holes. Mr Hall was the only decent one I remember, I am not very good at remembering names, sorry. I ran away at every chance, not because I was afraid but after just 6 months of being in there I thought to myself "I am going to give them as much back and give them the right runaround at 12". I feel for every single lad that went through those doors, and the ones that say they have nowt but good memories are the ones that did all the beating for the staff. I like to think we have all put it all behind us but every so often it hits me and I start feeling that little bit bitter again. Hope all the boys that went to Stanhope Approved School (ha ha) are all ok and doing well, best of luck to you all, we need it most of all, lol.

RE: RE: What A Place to Send Anybody
A few lads that I remember who were there when I was there between 1949-55: the Grout brothers, Elton twins, Dickie Turner 107 ,Trory brothers, Thomas family, D Kenyon, Kennerdy, Clothier 1, Grant 98, Friston, Watson, Scotty, Adams, Capell (RIP),Sharp (RIP), Lamb brothers, Humble, Oakes, Poulter, Lowery, Downes 55 (Welsh Guards), Newdick brothers, Whincup, Paul, Ure, Robinson, Roberts. All these lads would have long term effects owing to the atrocities that they where subject to, the headmaster Bowles was eventually sacked along with some of his cronies. Some say that not all the staff were bad, well they were for allowing the cruelties to happen when they could have acted for us poor defenceless kids, yes kids, may they rot in HELL! I was in Bewdley House from 1960 to 1964. I remember the stick that we all got ,especially on a Friday morning in assembly. I got the stick on a regular basis, not for being bad sometimes but if your face did not fit...

By the sounds of it Castle School has always been a place where bullies [staff] could go to take their hatred out on young kids, as far back as the 1950s right until it closed. What a bunch of t...ers. I would love to meet a few of them now lol, maybe not a lot are almost dead. David, email me m8 lofty ok pal

I was also at Stanhope Castle, between 1963 and 1967 my number was 87. I remember Jack Bowles as a horrible sadistic nasty piece of work whom we all feared. I can remember two boys doing a runner in mid winter and during the night, only to be brought back the next morning by Mr Madisen Master of Horsley House. I also remember hearing their screams as they were beaten by Jack Bowles and his walking stick. Often you would not see those that had received such a beating for about a week so that some of bruises could not be seen, having said that I did see the results of Jack Bowles's handiwork when these particular two boys were taking a shower, from the legs up to the back they were covered in bruises. Here's hoping you rot in hell Jack Bowles.

Hi, my name is Brian Jaffray from Middlesbrough. I was in Stanhope Castle School from 1969 to 1972 and my brother Johnny was there from 1968 1970. Lads might remember us Jaffa brothers. I was in Bewdley house, so called teachers Pervis, Maddson, Wheeler, Gasgoigne, Bowles. My memories are bad, about the beatings we all took, mostly for nothing. When I look back now I always think of lads who were there before me and after. I would like to hear from anyone who remember me. Thanks, Brian Jaffa
