OLD CHURCH

The Broadway c1955
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

In the fifties, my mother worked at the Stanmore Cottage Hospital. As I cycled down Uxbridge Road to visit her at work, I imagined the ivy-covered old church to be a Norman Keep. Does anybody know why the old church was allowed to fall into disrepair and the new one built next door?

RE: RE: OLD CHURCH

Hey,

I live in Stanmore now, right near the church. This website will give you some info on the churches - http://www.stjohnsstanmore.org.uk/history/

I think it's to do with the fact that the new church was comissioned about 100 years before the old one was made Grade 2 listed. It was only an outcry from the locals that stopped them destroying it entirely...

Hope that helps!

RE: RE: OLD CHURCH

Thanks Annie. How lucky you are to live in Stanmore. I am retired to Cyprus.
