USAF at East Kirkby
I was with the USAF at RAF Sturgate and was transferred to East Kirkby in Mar 1957. I worked in the personnel office and lived in the barracks that was located where the turkey farm is now. Many happy memories...the Red Lion was known as Fred's pub. After I got married to a girl from Grimsby, I lived for a while with with my wife in a small flat in the Grange at Miningsby. The Grange was owned by a guy named Morris (Maurice?) who had a bloke named George who worked for him. I bought George a pair of Levi jeans from the BX once and was he thilled. Left there in 1958 as it was closing.
Memories of A Child
I remember Eastville as a child growing up, we used to visit and stay with my nan (Linda Howard) every bank holiday. It was very quiet and peaceful. We had some lovely times, Grandad (John Howard) was the local smithy. Most times some of us would walk what dad called the 5 mile walk from the corner by the pub (the Wheatsheaf), and I remember the nights when the chip shop opened, it was heaven, they were scrummy, we (my brothers and sisters) used to like the batter scraps. My nan lived in one of the council houses across from the grain mill, we also used to go to the shop - Cooks general stores. There might be some families living there that still remember our family, mainly because there were 11 of us kids, Mom and Dad were Barbara and Alf. One of the other things was the home grown veggies and fruit that Nan would have growing in the back garden, Mom and Dad would always come away... Read more
'Kingsley' Boston Road , Sibsey
My late uncle, Walter J Urquhart, lived at the above address, with his wife Margaret O Urquhart(nee Brodie). Margaret's widowed mother also lived there, she was Mrs I E Brodie (nee Campbell). Mrs Brodie died at Sibsey in 1972. These three people were Scots-born. My uncle, W J Urquhart, was described as a 'Smallholder' in the telephone directory.
Langrick
I was born at Church Corner, Langrick, in one of a pair of tied cottages. My godparents lived next door. My mother was Joyce May Cargill, and she was living with her parents, Eva Kate and George Herbert White at the time of my birth. my father was Joseph William Cargill. He was in the Army, fighting in the second World War.
My paternal grandparents were Mary and John Perry Cargll. They lived a short distance away, along Armtree Road. There is not a trace of the little cottae where they brought up their large family.
The house where I was born on March 21st 1943 has now been converted into single dwelling. the old apple tree is still in the garden. There is still mistletoe growing in it.
My parents were married at Langrick Church. This is where my father and some of his brothers and sisters were baptised. I was baptised here too.
On January 21st 2007 my husband Keith and I... Read more
Ancestors From Coningsby
I've been researching my family history and have found that an ancestor of mine known as James Faunt used to live at a place called Packet Beerhouse, in fact he is in the 1891 census as being the "beerhouse keeper". He lived there with his wife Sarah. Is the building still in existence today? Are there any Faunts still living in the Coningsby area? I've been trying to find out more, but so far no success. I am a regular visitor to Grimsby so may nip over to Coningsby and try at the roots...so to speak.
RAF Vet.
I was stationed at Conningsby in 1953. I would be interested if there is anyone that served at that time on this base. I am now living in Canada.
