I was 28 years old at the time of this photograph, living at Roseworth, with wife, Doris, and daughter, Judith, aged two. Married at St Peter's Church in 1947, with Rev'd J McGill officiating, a 'wartime' wedding really, with rationing in place, and I in a khaki uniform with royal artillery brass in place, Doris in a treasured but borrowed weddding gown... Cleveland memories
I was stationed at RAF Thornaby for three years from 1954, and was welcomed into the community. I made friends with my namesake, Pat Whelan, and was invited to his home for some good parties. I also remember the Malloby family. There was a lad who worked in the cookhouse as a civilian washroom worker and I hung about with him... [more]

I was born in 1972 and moved to Thornaby in 1973 where I spent my life until the age of 24. People used to tease me that I was brought up in Thornaby and I was nicknamed 'the roughian'. People would say don't get on the wrong side of her (meaning me!) as I would punch their lights out! The more... [more]

I was still a teenager, 17 years old and my baby brother at school at Bede Campus. I escaped the campus by virtue of it not having been completed when I passed the 11+. The town centre in Billingham was still being built, and we used to hang out in the park - John Whitehead. In those days, pleasures... [more]

Billingham Campus School consisted of four halls - Bede, pictured in the foreground, Davy behind and Faraday furtherst away. The fourth hall, Stephenson was about 800 yards away, not pictured. There was a sports block with a swimming pool which can just be seen to the left of this photograph.

Do you remember ?
Thornaby Road when it was nothing but a twisting lane all the way to the New Inn
or the long walk to the Half Moon Inn (another one),
the two mile cottages,
snagging turnips after a day's swimming at Leven,
the old... [more]

My father's family came to Middlesborough at the time of the Pig-Iron. He came from Worcestershire, around Lye. His name was Robert Jepson. He had 4 sons and 1 daughter. Charles Jepson, being my great grandfather. Fred Jepson, his son being my grandfather. Fred and his brother Frank were professional footballers for Spennymoor United Football Club, and received a medal medallion... [more]

Its a Small World - Clifford Wilson
Hi, I was interested to see you were in 4p Clifford as I was also and of course Dickie Purvis was a familiar name to me as he became School Captain with me as Vice. Our House if I remember rightly was Dormans, which is where I had my first job for a very short time - in other words i... [more]

County Durham Photographic Memories
Stockton was granted its market charter by Bishop Bek in 1310, but until the 1840s it consisted of little more than the High Street, a few side streets, and a quayside railhead for Stockton & Darlington Railway. On the right can be seen the parish church, which dates from 1712. Other 18th-century buildings were the Town House (1735) and the Customs... [more]

We are looking in the other direction, to the north end of the High Street. The parish church tower stands prominently on the right, with the war memorial with its white columns in front. The present church dates from 1712. The tallest building across the road was M Robinson's Coliseum Department Store, now Debenhams. Beyond it is the former Globe Theatre,... [more]

The Town Hall stands prominently in the centre of the High Street and dates from 1735. Motor traffic levels were low when this photograph was taken - in later years severe restrictions and road re-design have been applied. The offices of the former National Provincial Bank - now NatWest - stand imposingly on the right.
