We are looking north from Old Market. On the right is the White Horse, run by George Rampling; next door is Boggis's the drapers in the 18th-century building with dormer windows; then comes William Alston's 'Second Hand Furniture Warehouse' and the Green Dragon run by Arthur Viall - these last two were replaced in the 1960s. The first-floor bay window just visible beyond is dated 1876 in mosaic, and beside it is the entrance to the North Street Schools. On the left is Angelo Smith's Clockhouse, opened in 1886 and still trading, and, by way of contrast, the Albion Temperance Hotel.
