My Home Town
My wife moved to Sutton 1950 aged 4, now aged 60 and living in Norfolk we are rekindling memories of such a warm and inviting town. Memories come flooding back. The railway station, the cinema, the old tree outside Trueforms where my wife worked for 10 years. We are seeking information and photos of what used to be Elm Grove and Lawsons Fish shop (now Barclays Bank we believe). Memories of Sutton from the Green in 1968 to the station. Also any photos of Clyde Road Secondary School for girls.

RE: RE: My Home Town
I grew up in Elm Grove from my birth in 1945 until moving to Chaucer Gardens at aged 18 with my parents and three siblings. We lived at number 5 so it was very close to the fish shop where I'd stand for ages admiring the art of the mongers, I remember Jack Bishop among them. Elm Grove itself, to us, was just one big playground, especially the 'the bomb buildings', we played there for hours, and to this day I could still name nearly every householder and child that lived there. I could go on for hours remembering what a happy time it was for us children growing-up after the war, the Coronation, trolly-buses, penny for guy, bonfires, just wonderful memories. As an aside, my mother, who will be 89 this year, lived there from 1944 and has an even longer memory.A s she once said, we were poor but we were happy. That just about sums up Elm Grove.

RE: RE: My Home Town
Lawsons fish shop was owned by my auntie's dad. I lived in Manor Lane and went to Manor Park Primary until 1970 when we moved to Basingstoke in Hampshire. My uncle was the black belt at Sutton adult school judo club for many years. As luck would have it, a good friend of mine from Basingstoke is now seeing a girl who lives in Sutton so I can meet up, have a pint and a look round at the old places I used to know.
