More about this scene

These baths are around the corner from where Throwley Road once turned to the north (it is now Throwley Way and acts as an inner relief road or High Street by-pass). In the background is the chimney for the boiler house which was used to heat the pool water and the slipper baths. Every week I used to walk to the baths in a crocodile of schoolboys from Sutton High School for Boys in Cheam Road, for swimming lessons. The building was demolished in 1971.

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

If this is Throwley Way parallel to Sutton Hugh Street, then the now defunct Sutton High School for Boys used these erstwhile Baths for swimming lessons and competitions, right up to the school's controversial closure in 1962.
Six of us lived in a 2 up 2 down property in Sutton until I was 18. No bathroom, and a toilet in the garden which backed onto an alleyway that ran the length of the Trolley bus garage. Imagine, when I reached 10, mum allowed my younger brother and I to walk to Sutton public baths and pay for a proper bath.
The Cheam Ladies Swimming Club used to train here in the winter months when the Cheam baths were closed. Pop Worsell was our coach and trained us. Fanella Webb and Pam Turner represented GB and I won county championships.
