This was once a popular suburb for wealthy fishing boat owners from Hull. Beside the delightful village pond stands the Day and Secondary School (right), a gift in 1876 of John Todd, owner of Swanland Hall. At the centre is Christ Church, dating from 1693, and rebuilt in 1803 to incorporate the Library and Institute. The Tudor-style building on the left has had many uses, and is now an estate agent. Industrialist Sir James Reckitt bought the manor in 1884 (it was demolished in 1932); being a Quaker, he refused to allow a pub in the village. The Swan and Cygnet, now behind the big tree, was not opened until 1980 - the same year as the nearby Humber Bridge.
