In 1722 the writer and traveller Daniel Defoe visited Swansea and commented that Swansea was 'a very considerable town and has a very good harbour. There is also very great trade for coal which they export to all the ports of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall and also to Ireland itself so that one sometimes sees a hundred sail of ships at a time loading coal here'. This panoramic view is very evocative of two major factors in the city's history: the rolling hills which surround it, and the rows of terraced worker's cottages, which testify to the city's once significant industrial power.

Dear Frith Collection, My grandfather, Llew E. Morgan, was a renowned photographer in Wales, (see FULL CIRCLE at www.morganhopkin.co.uk) I am convinced that he took this photograph as my grandmother and mother are walking towards the camera on the right. Fisrt Day At Work
I remember walking through the old Castle Gardens on my first ever day at work at the old GPO office, 13-14 Wind Street in October 1976 - it was very pretty, unlike the concrete version that exists today.

Townhill Swansea
I was born at Ceri Road, Townhill. My mother was called Beatrice Gray, her maiden name was Cridland. When I was three I caught polio, just a year later my mother died. I spent a long time in the isolation hospital, Hill House Hospital. I know there were other children in the same road who also caught the polo virus. Swansea Vale Smelter Workd
Does anyone have photos of Swansea Vale Works? I have tried to find photos but cannot locate any. My grandfather lived in Heol Las area but unsure if in any of the houses shown. Name: Reginald Davies Worked in Swansea Vale Cynder Plant for many years. Any photos would be appreciated. Thanks, Wendy

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
