Coate Water.
I remember swimming in Coate Water aged about 8 - 10 and nearly drowning in the open air swimming pool. My cousin fell into the lake when he was about three but was rescued by my uncle who leapt in to get him out. The diving board in the picture seemed enormous to me and I was impressed by the people who dived from the top. I love Richard Jeffries books and have several which I treasure. I am now aged 73.
I went to Holy Rood Catholic Primary School for two years travelling by bus from Ashbury each school day the fare was 11d return.

RE: RE: Coate Water.
I can remember the day I was at Sussex Square shops when Prince Philip landed in his big red Wessex helicopter, and all us kids had been given these little Union Jack flags on sticks to wave as he landed. A few days after there used to be a huge great flintstone in the middle of the Sussex Square shops so me and a few mates decided to paint it red overnight and we got caught by the local copper who made us come back and clean every bit of paint off with a bucket and scrubbing brush, which if I remembered took us days to do after school. I now have met up with a mate who was there when Prince Philip landed this helicopter, whose name is John Sheanan and who lived at Woodside Avenue, Swindon. Ahh, those were the good old days.
