Grammar School And All That!
I remember the Grammar School well - I got transferred from Mexborough Tech because I had failed my 11+ Then I actually got to TEACH at the Grammar School whena student when the music teacher was ill for a time. My dad owned the shop at the top of West Street [Ladlow's greengrocers] and Waddington's was just oppposite which I could see from my bedroom window. I eventually became a headteacher in Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, Hampshire and Humberside so I must have been doing SOMETHING RIGHT! I remember filming on 16mm film the new HALL which opened that year - wow - William Hague actually sang hymns in there too!!! What a change it is today in 2010. I fondly remember the old Majestic cinema, just a stone's throw from my house, and I loved going there - I remembered the closing date when "Kings Rhapsody" was the last film [it was due to re-open after "cleaning" but it was losing money hand... Swinton
I moved to Swinton with my parents and sister from nearby Rawmarsh in 1961 when I was 9, to a house on Piccadilly Road, and in 1963 I attended Mexborough Grammar School, spending the first year at the old school before moving to the new school for my second year. This picture of Station Street changed little in the early 1960s and just a bit further down on the right was the old Roxy Cinema where I saw many films in the (by then) rather run down cinema. I suppose you could say that I grew up in Swinton and I have happy memories of the town.
Family History
Hi, This isn't a memory, but in 1881-1883 my great-great-grandfather resided at 83 Station Street, he was a stationer. His name was John Thomas Haden.
Cobblers Shop, Rockingham Road, Swinton
My memory relates to the cobblers shop on Rockingham Road, Swinton as this was my grandad's shop, I used to walk down the back way, behind the houses to get to it, it is still a shoe repairers shop. At 4pm every day, my nan would take my grandad tea and bread and butter. Does anyone have an old photo of the area of shops on Rockingham Road (opposite Kings head pub)? Thanks.
Memories of South Yorkshire
Nags Head Pub Glasshouse Lane Kilnhurst
I am researching my Great Grandmother Amy Jenkins and have information from her marriage lines that she was living at the Nags Head when she married George Thomas Roberts in 1896 but can find no further info on this no photos or anything, if you know of anyone who could assist me in this I would appreciate it . We believe from family word of mouth that Amy had been to South Africa and worked her passage back and she could have been the pianist at the pub.
A House Called Inglenook (Earl Fitzwilliams Property)
I was born at Inglenook in Kilnhurst September 1920. My parents were Ralph Atkin and Ethel Susanna Brader. My memories consist of my parents activities as related to me as a child. My grandfather David Brader was Swinton stationmaster for the Midland Rwy. I am told that David had some children by his first wife Alice and after Alice died he married my grandmother, Sarah who bore Mary,Arthur and my dad, Ralph. If any of these or their offspring are surviving please do post here.
Living in Mexborough
I moved to Mexborough in 1953 when I was 3 years old. I lived in Melton Street where I believe the houses were originally the stables for Mexborough Manor. I lived there until 1966 when I moved to the Windhill estate. The 'Schofield' Technical College was named after one of my relatives on my mum's (Thelma Schofield) side.
Could anyone give me any info about the Manor at Mexborough?
Childhood
My memories of Mexborough are of living at York Street and playing in the 'backs' with Ann Sandford, Peter Sandford, Mary Sandford, Pat Sandford, Ian Gamble, Janet Owen, Christine Waller (Bebe), Pamela Foster, Rita Barker, Janet Barker. (Where are they now?).
Schofield College, Mexbrough
I also am related to the Schofield family, my father George Schofield was the flower boy that opened Schofield College. My father's grandad was the person the college was named after, he was mayor at that time, so probably contributed a lot to the community. I have a few photos of the college and my mum Audrey loves to tell a good tale about her visits to Mexborough.
