Airwork Service RAF Bassingbourn
I worked for three years at RAF Bassingbourn for Airwork Services and enjoyed my time in the village, plenty of pubs in those days, one was just outside. Does any one remember which pub featured in a film about the war called either 'The Battle of Britain', 'The Dambusters' or 'Reach for the Sky'?
Cycle Rides to Ashwell
A group of us lads from Muswell Hill in North London used to cycle to Ashwell on a weekend to visit one of our mates who moved there with his mum, his name was Peter and his mum was housekeeper at the Manor House where we used to camp and meet the local girls. We also used the local pub knowing we were under age at the time, but in those days we were a responsible lot and were never any trouble to anyone. I doubt if anyone is still around from the local crowd but if there is maybe they can add their own memories.
Village of Orwell
When I was a child, we moved to Orwell Grange, a large house on an estate of 7 acres. The village of Orwell stands on the A603 just 7 miles from Cambridge, where my mother taught shorthand and typing. Our home was also run as a school, where many students attended from all over the world. I rembember driving my pony Pepper down the road to the Barrington shop. Times have changed! Not far from our house, down the country lane is Wimpole Park, we used to ride our horses along the verge, and thru the park. I remember many happy rides through the fields of Cambridgeshire. The sound of cooing wood pigeons will stay with me forever.
Royston 1967-9
I worked for Airwork Services in the late 1960s and there were people from Royston who worked there, there was a girl called Linda who worked on the camp hairdressers and a couple of others, I can't recall the names but I still have photos taken outside the shop alongside the lady who was next door in the NAAFIshop. If anyone sees this can they add a comment if they remember Pat the little Scotsman? I went in a gang to the fairground with Linda and others to Royston. I loved that town but had to leave when camp closed. I know Linda got a job in a hairdressers in Royston as I spoke to her on the phone some years later. I am retired now and might find myself up for a weekend from where I live in Kent.
Royston Heath Lodge (work House)
A memory that I shouldn't recollect. I could have only been about 4 years old and I can remember staying at Heath Lodge with my family. It was I think used as a halfway house for families waiting for housing in the 1960s. I'm now 50 and I can still remember my mother taking me to the nursery underneath the balcony where we lived, and watching her leave to go to the shops. I can still see the chain link fencing that went round the walkway. I still remember some of the families that lived in the same place, the Lloyds and the Jarmins. If anyone else can remember staying at Heath Lodge in the 1960s I would like to hear from you and also anyone who has any photos of Heath Lodge - I know it was demolished in 1972. Bassingbourn Airfield
A relative of mine worked on the airfield for a private contractor until his death in 1940. His name was George Fynn, of Rainham in Essex. He was riding pillion on a motor bike whan they had a head on with an R.A.F. truck near the airfield. Would anyone know of this person?
Locating my Grandparents Grave in Hitchin/Letchworth.
I do not have a memory of Hitchin or the church, as I live in Canada, but I have a photo of my grandfather and grandmother's grave with a granite cross as a marker. They lived in Letchworth and my grandfather's name was William Tye, and my grandmother's name was Rosina. They are buried together and I am wondering if they were buried here. They died in 1920-1922 about, I wonder if their grave marker is still standing.
