The Doddlebug
When I was born in 1939 we lived at 97 Shelvers Way, but my very first memory happened in 1944. It was a lovely sunny day and my mother, Doris Parker, was going to feed the chickens at the bottom of the garden. I was playing outside when mother called out to tell me to go inside and into the shelter as there was a "funny" thing in the sky. I never did get to the shelter, only the dining-room and the next thing I remember was a great bang, glass flying everywhere and a crystal fruit bowl on the sideboard exploding. A doddlebug (flying bomb) had landed in the field opposite our house causing quite a lot of damage. Soon a WVS (Women's Voluntary Service) van arrived to help, mainly, I think, by dispensing cups of tea but what I remember most of all is our neighbour, Mrs Everington, giving me a sugar lump, something I'd never even seen before!
Mr Hargreaves
During the 1960's I lived next door to Jennetts Restaurant, in the Bricklayers Arms pub. Mr Hargreaves was the owner/manager and employed a number of very exotic Italian and Spanish waiters. "Jim" the gardener (the restaurant had very lovely and extensive grounds) was an inveterate gambler and in the days when televisions were scarce used to spend his afternoons watching our television when the racing was on.

Restful Days
Many days were spent all over this area for many years with the special man in my life and children. I still spend quiet days there dreaming, remembering all the good years, visiting friends we have there.
An Idilic Childhood
My grandmother, Lillian Kemp, lived at 9 Howard Close. We visited regularly and had the best days running all over the village. Fishing sticklebacks out of the pond, looking for rats at the rubbish dump (!), trying to catch the wild kittens, riding various ponies bare back, raiding orchards for apples, watching the shire horses pulling the brewery dray on Derby Day as they set off from the Chequers pub. We lived full time, briefly, at Howard Close and I attended the school in Breech Lane and sang in the choir at St Peters. Sadly my grandmother passed away in 1971 so those wonderful days were cut short. I have very fond memories of those days
Dudleys in Walton on The Hill
My great-grandfather Henry Dudley grew up in Walton On The Hill, as did many of his ancestors and siblings. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1874. His father Jacob Dudley married my great-great-grandmother Jemima King in 1828 and they had eleven children. Walton On The Hill, I am proud to say, looks every bit as I would have imagined it to be, a beautiful, peaceful and serene location. Next year following my retirement, I will fulfill a lifelong ambition to visit Banstead and all its surrounding counties including of course Walton On The Hill. My family tree is on ancestry.com.uk .
Howards Close
I was born at 23 Howard Close in October 1963. It was a lovely place for children to grow up. A large green and a playground, little traffic, dogs and other residents. Everyone looked out for one another. I attended the infant school and then the junior school in Breech Lane. I was married in Walton church on March 5th 1988, a cold bright day, it snowed in the morning. It is the very best place for riding. I started at a young age and carried on. I have ridden all over Walton Heath, Walton Common, Headly Heath, Epsom Downs and I know all of these areas totally. I really miss such wonderful riding country. I now live in Cornwall but do come back each year to visit.
1972
Married at the wonderful old church of St. Peter's Walton on the Hill, 5th July 1972. At this time, my parents were living at Tudor Court, Walton St. Walton on the Hill, and Mum, owned the shop below, Anne Cleeves. I had been over in NZ for almost two years on a working holiday, and came home with a Kiwi in tow, strict instructions from the parents, if you want to marry, please marry at St Peter's so we did. Loved the area, walked for miles over Walton Heath, even before I left UK for NZ.. as Mum had the business for years there, and we lived in Streatham. Happy memories of a lovely village, what surprised me one day here in NZ, a car came down the lane, now the lane where I am is a no exit, out in the country, and I spoke with the driver, she said you are English, I said yes, lived in Surrey for a bit, she said, her Uncle was there,...
