The Good Times & Bad
The comments by one boy that Mr Cory interfered with him, load of tosh, don't belive him. When I was there I had good times and bad, the teachers were ok, some of them would give you a dig with their fist into you just for fun, you would get a clout of some of them. There were three bullies but we had fun, good fun, two weeks in Littlehampton, great fishing. It has taken some time for me to track down anything about Taxel Lodge, glad to have found it at last. Mr Cory would drop me off up on the moors, never ever did he interfere with me. My hobby was bird watching, it got me out of the school for hours, also it meant I was on my own, great times. A great pity the building has ended up as flats. I never knew what was Mr Cory's first name, does anybody out there know it?
Good Times at Taxel Lodge 1971-1975
Had some great times at Taxel Lodge - was there for just over 4 years - 10 till 15 years old. Littelhampton twice on holiday, went camping with scouts had good football team. My first pair of football boots wos something out of the 1940s - steel toe caps Mr Curry and Mr Hughes wos Head master, Mr Lomas, Mr Gregory, Mr Lindsey - all good teachers. No teachers never sexually abused by any teacher at any time. Me got a slap here and there till I said you do that a one more time and you will get one back - that wos Mr Lomas. But over all had a good 4 years there if anybody got any pitcures to put up from that time that would be good to look at.
Taxal Edge Facebook Group
Hi there people, nice to see memories of Taxal Edge on here. Please let's not get it confused with Taxal Lodge, 2 very different places, Taxal Edge and Taxal Lodge... I I have set up a Facebook group ,please search Taxal Edge Children's Home and please, please join, the more the merrier.There are photos of Taxal Edge and more to be added soon. Taxal used to be a home for sick children before it was a children's home run by boys' and girls' welfare societies. See you all soon.
Taxel Convelescent Home
According to what I have found out, this home was run in my day by two ex service men, one of them being married. There was a German female cook who made the top of rice pudding with a sheet of toffee on the top.

Taxal Edge Convalescent Home
I remember going to Taxal Edge Convalescent Home for some weeks. I cried for the first twenty-four hours because I was so homesick. I can recall how we woke up to the lovely smell of porridge every morning, it was the most delicious porridge I have ever eaten. We had to attend either the Catholic Church or Church of England every Sunday morning. When I told them that I was a Quaker, they decided that that the C of E was the best for me - I had never been to a Church before. In the afternoons, we could choose whether to go on a short or long walk (5 miles)
Memories of Taxal Lodge
My memories at Taxal Lodge are good ones. I started there at 12 in 1979/80. I did not get much of an education in the traditional sense but I got taught how to respect people, property, and the countryside. David Hughes was the headmaster when I started there aka 'Yozza'. Having come from a poor background on a rough council estate the place was a saviour for me. If I had not gone there I would probablt not have the life I have now. It taught me to work hard and have rewards for the things you do. I know the place didn't work out for everyone, but for me it did.
I have great pride in telling my son that I went there and tell him all about the canoeing, bike-riding, pot-holing, rock-climbing, etc and my main mentor was Gordon Fletcher, who passed away is sadly missed. The only person I still have contact with is Viv Darlington, and... Read more
Taxal Lodge
I am writing to say at last I've found a photo of what I believe to be what I knew as Taxal Edge Convalescent home for children with chest problems, I was there in 1959 for 4 months. The home was used for children from Manchester, Liverpool Ashton Under Lyme and other areas, but I was accepted from Yorkshire as I was in need of urgent convalesence, I remember Mrs Griffiths the cook, Dr Brown Miss Shakeshaft, Mr & Mrs Fuller who were in charge, plus a border collie who used to disappear in the night and we had to go and fetch him back from a local farm. We did lots of walking and playing out to get lots of fresh air. I don't remember any problems with the staff, there was a David Broom and a John White (John was from Liverpool) to fellow sufferers. I'm afraid I can't think of anything else to write, if anyone else was there at that time please do contact me.
Abuse at Taxal Lodge
I was abused at Taxal Lodge from the age of 8 to 15 years of age. I am now 46 years old and for the first time I am ready to face up to my abusers. Taxal Lodge School For Boys
I was at Taxal Lodge between 1974 to 1977, at that time Mr David Hughes was the head master,and lived in a flat inside the main building. Mr David Dusgate was the deputy head. I loved being at Taxal, it instilled in me a love of the countryside. I got on with all the staff who worked there, Mr Jim Vernon who was the caretaker at that time was someone who was good to get on with, he always had time to talk and help if you needed it, Philis his wife worked in the kitchens, they lived on site in a cottage at the back of the buildings near the wood workshop. We had runs around Taxal Moor, as well as cycle rides. The teachers at that time were Barry Linsley, John Lomas, Mr Booth, Mr Lomax, Mr Gregory. Taxal Lodge School
I would like to know if any of the teachers and staff who worked at Taxal Lodge are still alive and well, they were Mr David Hughes, Mr David Dusgate, Mr Booth, Mr Gregory, Mr Lomax, also Mr david Lomas, Mr Barry Linsley, Mr Jim Vernon and wife Philis. There was also a Mr Holmes who worked there for a short time. I know these have died - Mr Brown the gardener, Mrs Dale who worked in the surgery with Mrs Godard, and Mrs Hatten the cook.

My Time at Taxal
I'm shocked to the core to read the above message about the bloke being abused. I was at Taxal Lodge from 1989-92 and had an absolutely brilliant time there. The scenery in the winter from my bedroom window was outstanding and the summers were even better. All the social workers were brilliant and the activities we could do in the hills was something we would never have got the chance to do back in the city. I'm really sad that it's now been sold to turn into flats, this is one of the finest houses you will see or ever get the chance to live in.
ABUSED
I was 11 years old when I attended this school in Whaley Bridge, the years 1970-1975, and I was sexually abused by the headmaster Mr Cory, he would take me upstairs above the showers and touch me and kiss me, also when he got the chance he would take me out on my own in the car and go up to the moors pretending he was going bird watching and I am not the only person who was abused there. I wish the people who was also tell there story about this school for paedos.
Memories of Derbyshire
School/Doctor
School doubled as the church on a Sunday and I sat next to the altar rail often gazing at the pedals and knobs and levers of the organ instead of listening. I remember sitting at bench-type tables for lunch, stirring the Christmas pudding and hoping for the sixpence. We had two classrooms - little ones with Mrs Fidler - bigger ones in the main room with Mr Nixton, who constantly sucked Polo Mints to cover up the smell of his Woodbines! There was a huge coke heap in the playground which we used to climb up. There was a wall dividing the outside toilets but we could hear the boys having certain contests. The woman who lived one side was rather grumpy and refused to return footballs. I also remember a doctor's surgery in the front room of one of the cottages opposite the Post Office and pills being given in round, cardboard boxes. It was a fun time.
Memory of Thomas Anthony Clarke
We are trying to track down our family and we have records that a Thomas Anthony Clarke lived at Lyndhurst, Buxton Road, Chinley and was a Agricultural Hardware Merchant.
If anyone has any information that would help us trace a long lost Great Grandfather you would not imagine how grateful we would be!

Joan or Lucy Clarke
Hi, I am just wondering if anyone, anyone at all, remembers a lady called Joan or Lucy Clarke, born about 1921? Her mother was called Elsie May Clarke (as far as I know), I don't know Joan's father's full name... I know Joan was close to her dad or it may have been her grandad. I also know that around the late 1930s she become pregnant (still unmarried at the time) and she gave birth to a son who she called John Clarke. I think Joan had moved by then to Hadfield but I'm not too sure. Joan's mother Elsie I believe changed her name to Barber and later died in Ashton in the early 1970s. Fond Memories of Bank Hall
Bank Hall was a school back in the 1970s. The head was a Mr Brennan. It would be lovely to chat to any other lads that were at the school at the time. I've seen a few things in the night, ladies in white and a few dogs from the kennels. I could write abook on this school. I visited Bank Hall some time ago, and it broke my heart, it's falling apart, the present owner has done nothing to help it, I am waiting for the sale sign to go on to it. If anybody would like to know more about Bank Hall School please let me know.
Bank Hall
Hi Carl, yeh mixed memories of Bank Hall, Kevin Brennan, the head, Roger Cubby, Peter Lucas, Alan Ticombe, Gerald Phillips, Leicester Symthe etc who were staff, and the pupils Ray Lynch, Phil Carney, Steve Butler etc etc. Great location and all those trips out to Monsall Dale etc, the youth club in chapel and the lovely local ladies Joanne Hayes, Anne Ashton and many more. I remember the Howarths and a lot of very nice locals, male and female, who became good friends. I know at times some of the Bank Hall lads didn't exactly behave at times and thank the locals for putting up with that. I have been back a few times over the years and taken a walk up to the old Celtic earthworks above Bank Hall and around the area. I hope everyone is well and wish you all health happiness and peace.
