Bedfordshire memories
The White Horse
Does anyone remember the Pickerings who owned The White Horse Hotel in Hocliffe in the early 1900s? This would have been my grandfather, his name was William Pickering and his wife was Kate. My father remembers living there, he was born in 1901 (Leslie Pickering) but moved on when he was quite young. I would love to hear from anyone who is still able to remember the hotel. I have a large picture of the back of the hotel with Kate feeding her turkeys. The pub food was good and it was well known for her marvellous Hare Pie.
My Childhood Days
I was 9 years old when this was taken and I was friends with Susan Day who lived in the white house on the right known as Days Motors.
My Son Kevin Was Born
This was taken the year my son Kevin was born. His brother Stephen was 2yrs old and we spent many happy days walking to the sweet and paper shop with my mum and dad, Bill and Joan Harris and also my brother Paul.
Remembering my Brother Paul Harris Who Has Recentley Died
My brother Paul spent many happy days here but didn't realise it at the time. He was the best brother anyone could have, for the last 16yrs he has been disabled with MS always a smile never complaining. This is my tribute to him my lovely brave brother.
Toddington, A Memory
Local legend says that a witch is imprisoned within the mound beside the church at Toddington, and there was a local tradition that on Shrove Tuesday ('Pancake Day'), the day before Ash Wednesday, if we put our ears to the ground on the mound we could hear the witches frying their pancakes. I was a child in the 1940s and always visited my gran on Pancake Day, she lived opposite the mound. I Grew up in Houghton Regis 1962-1980
Hi my name is Sally and I grew up in Houghton Regis. My twin brother and I were born in Luton before the new Luton and Dunstable Hospital opened. We both went to Tithe Farm Infants and Juniors Schools along with our siblings.
My abiding memory was of a lovely school teacher called Miss Black. She was very strict but also very fair, no one ever messed around in her class, she was also my form teacher for a few years and taught me to love writing, which I still do. I was also a choir girl at the local church for a while, but got kicked out for laughing, and it was the vicar who made us laugh, but I still love music.
Houghton Regis was a nice place to grow up and we often went to Chantry Woods to make dens and go to the Woods down Old Bedford Road to find tadpoles, to raise in an old belfast sink in the garden, at 10... Read more
Watching Parkside Grow
When my brother and I were old enough to go to Linmear Middle School,(Kings Houghton now), we would walk via a huge field next to Sundon Road, this was sold and Parkside estate began to grow. One of my old school friends called Shirley moves from Tithe Farm to the new town houses on Parkside, we were all so jealous because her house had 3 floors.
Whist attending Linmear the Upper School was built, which had a small swimming pool in it. This was opened to the public during the breaks and at week-ends so we didn't have to walk all the way to Dunstable, which was a nice change.
Both my brother and I didn't go to the Upper school as our elder brother had gone to Ashton's and then onto Manshead Upper School, which was built next to the Downside Estate. So in the end 3 of my brotherw went to Manshead and 1 brother and my sister went to Northfields instead. ... Read more
