More about this scene

There is not a breath of wind, so the drainage mill is motionless and the sailing boats are becalmed on the Ant, which is little more than a narrow stream at this point. The river is so shallow that only small flat-bottomed boats or gun-punts can navigate its channels, and sailors spend more time tacking from side to side than moving in a straight line. This area is a haven for voles and water-fowl.
