Hi, I live in Thorne now. I was wondering if anybody knows anything about G Webster & Son? It was a drapers and furnishers, and was located on Finkle Street, phone number was 812 107. I found an old business card today and would like to find out a bit more. If you only know a little bit could you comment please, it would be much appreciated! Thanks dears!

RE: RE: Thorne Now.

I was reading the comment about G WEBSTER & SON Drapers and Furnishers. As a family member the business sadly closed in December 1999 due to retirement. The business was trading for over 100 years - we also originally had a clothing shop on Finkle Street which has been turned into three separate shops next to Boots. We also had the shop on Main Street Hatfield which is now a wedding shop. When we sold the shop in Thorne it was a sad day. Mr G Webster has since past away.

I still have memories of the shop in the late 1970s having ten staff working in the shop and having a saving club and delivery service. I have many pictures of the shop too. The sad thing is that towards the last twenty years of business we had so many windows broken from vandalism and stock was stolen which was one of the reasons why the buiness did not carry on . Thorne had so much potenial with having a big market in market place - I just wish the local council would have supported all local businesses more.
