High Street 1951

My ancestors lived in Thrapston from the early 1800s to 1917. They were saddle and harness makers, does anyone have any pictures of the shop? I believe it was near to the King's public house.

A memory of Thrapston in Northamptonshire shared on Thursday, 11th December 2008.

RE: RE: Lords Saddle & Harness Makers

Are there any surviving relatives of the Loveday family from Thrapston. Mathew Loveday originally from Gretton was an Apprentice for William and Martha Lord in 1841.They were saddle and harness makers.

RE: RE: Lords Saddle & Harness Makers

Hello :-) The Lovedays are part of my family tree as well. The ones that were close to my great-grandparents, Charles William Ferrar and Sarah Elizabeth, who emigrated to the USA with and settled in Takoma Park. I was a little girl, only ten in 1960 when their daugther Gwendoline Mary, my dad's mum, passed away so I can not recall the Loveday names ... sorry. I would love to hear from you if you are connected to these folks. Charlene W. (Ferrar-Padgett) Diggs

RE: RE: Lords Saddle & Harness Makers

I have today been metal detecting in fields in the parish of Brigstock (midway between Thrapston and Gretton) and have found a beautiful brass hand cast hinge with M. LOVEDAY, MAKER, GRETTON cast into its face! W Loveday was an apprentice to LORDS SADDLE AND HARNESS MAKERS and it must be that he set up business under his own name and continued with his skill... I hope info useful 23/09/2011. PS there are also LOVEDAYS in BRIGSTOCK

RE: RE: Lords Saddle & Harness Makers

My ancestor, Thomas Bengamin Lord. lived at Brigstock and would have known Matthew Loveday. I believe the Lovedays' business was harness making in Gretton and my great-great-great-great-grandfather would have set him on as an aprentice to make the harnesses as they were only making saddles according to census and early records. It's great to have found a relic from this date and I believe it would have been in the ground since 1840. Matthew Loveday can be found working for his own business in Wellingborough as a Harness Maker later in the 18th century. Matthew Loveday also worked along side my great-great-great-grandfather James Lord at Wood Street in Higham Ferrers making saddles in 1840. However further research in to the name Loveday at Gretton may also uncover that Matthew's father was also named Matthew. I can only imagine the traveling that was once done servicing and selling these saddles and harnesses. I would like to see the hinge and the field in which it was found. It's a great pity I can't find an old saddle with the name of Lord upon it.
