Throckley Fish Shop

The Post Office c1950
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

Throckley Fish Shop was situated next to the Post Office. It was owned by the Humble family who were really nice people and made delicious fish and chips. Eddie and I think it was his son Freddy  who worked there and kept the kids like myself hanging around in place. I'm sure I got a clip behind the ear hole a few times off Freddie, no doubt I would have deserved it. This would of been in the early 1960s, my memories of hanging around there go as far as up to when we were Mods on Scooters Lambrettas and Vespas covered in spotlights and mirrors all chromed up.
Stew and Colin McIvor, Jimmy Bolt, Charles Earl, Stew Pentland, Vic and Carl Ions were a few of the lads I remember had scooters. I still have some old photos of them outside those very shops. There was also a cafe opposite where we would hang out.
A couple of hundred metres further up was the Junior School where I went as a lad. I used to call to a house half way up that had an orchard on my way to school, knock on a little hatch and would purchase 4 apples for a penny.
It's a shame there is only one photo of Throckley in The Francis Frith Collection as I remember purchasing old postcards of Throckley, one had the Lyric picture house with shops, and another one of the roundabout further up.

RE: RE: Throckley Fish Shop

Hi Rob Is this the same Rob Blackburn from St Mary's Place? Yeah. going to Throckley fish shop was all part of the night out, the entertainment was good too! You would get your fish & chips and watch a battle going on outside, all for free. I have not been back to the UK for 15 years, but I did hear that it's changed owners to Asians, is that correct? Or re the bike and scooter lads, you Eric Gibson, also known as Von Zip, and there was a guy up Mayfield Avenue, who took all the panels off his scooter, just can't remember his, something Quinn, or McQuinn? Cheers Robbie

Hi Rob, go to the library and you can buy books called B.Y.G.O.N.E Newburn or Westerhope or Throckley or Walbottle or Lemington etc etc They are only a Quid each and have some fasinating really old post card size photos in. I have just sent one of Newburn to Palmina Moore in Australia You will be amazed. Jimmy.

RE: RE: Throckley Fish Shop

The Freddie was possibly Fred Smith who married Ann Humble and they took over the shop in the early 1960s. I left the village in 1961 but have good memories of a happy childhood with lots of freedom and adventure play.

RE: RE: Throckley Fish Shop

Yeah, the Fred in question was definitely Fred Smith who took the shop over from Eddie Humble (Anne's Dad), it is now owned by Sheera Dhillon. By the way, I still see Fred when I go up the Bank Top Club, best pint in the northeast although I am biased.

RE: RE: Throckley Fish Shop

Hi Robert Boustead used to go to Throckley fish shop every Saturday for a lady up Woodside Avenue called Mrs Thompson. Have you a sister called Dora? I'm almost sure I used to go to school with her. Throckley was the place to live. I loved Bartons Club.
