White City/Newburn Road.
We came to live at 12 Hewley Crescent in 1950. My gran, Mrs Knight, lived on Newburn Road, at that time she only had gas lighting and cooking. She had electricity installed in 1955 for the FA Cup on TV, she had a house-full that day. I can also remember when they built the Centurion public house 1954/5. There a large gang of us who lived in Hewley Crescent at that time, the crescent was used for football, cricket and sledging in the winter. I have fond memories of the time when I lived in Throckley. I also take the name to whereever I live and call my house Throckley.

RE: RE: White City/Newburn Road.
My first memories are of the family home in Newburn Road, number 240 to be precise, from which we used to look over the fields to the Tyne valley beyond. The field in front of the house was, I believe, the Duke of Northumberland's largest, and it was there that the "White City" was built, somewhat changing the landscape and our view! The Centurian was a useful place to buy sweets etc in the evenings after Tommy Liddle's shop (shack?) had closed, and even the odd illicit Woodbine! I had several friends who lived on the estate, including Hewley Crescent, but sadly don't remember names.

I work at Denecroft House on Newburn Road and the house is 100 years old this year [2011]. We have no idea who lived in the house before it became a residential care home but it is a big old house and if anyone can give us some idea of the history of the house it would help us in our centenery celebrations planned for this autumn .

Hazel,
The Walley (or was it Wally, Whalley...?) family lived in Dencroft before it became a nursing home. I think it was sold in about 1982/3 ish but cannot be more precise than that.
Good luck with your celebrations

Re Denecroft House, the Whalley family lived in Brier Lane if my memory serves me well. They were related to a family who lived in 35 Mayfield Avenue whose surname was Barrett, the oldest was Fred then Keith and Ian. The names of the Whalley family escape me, I think one could be George. In the late 1960s or early 1970s I am almost certain a young couple bought that big house after he won a lot of money on the football pools. I could be wrong as it was a long time ago.

Does anyone from Throckley remember if Deneside House used to be called Parkside, going back to the late 1950s to maybe early 1970s?

Hi Mary, long time no speak, how's Billy? The house your speaking of is at the left hand side of Mayfield Avenue, not Briar Lane, and it was my late uncle George Whaley that used to live there, that house was just a 4 bed council house. The big houses at the bottom of Mayfield were Parkside first was the pools winner and the next was a Dr Wallie. That whole area was called "Parkside" including the houses further up and round past the seat that was up the steps set back from the road.
