Tilhead, Rose And Crown: Painting in Bar
Summer 1959 (I think) I was with Abingdon School Combined Cadet Force at Westdown Camp for our annual training week. The nearest pub, for us naughty under-age drinkers in the evenings, was the Rose and Crown. Apart from the excellent beer and the landlord's tolerant welcome, my abiding memory is of a simple watercolour(?) painting, possibly over the fireplace, of a night time veiw of the pub under a full moon with a bird standing behind a pig outside the front door. Below the painting instead of a title were the letters BEVOAPAOTRACOAMN. A pint for the landlord bought the translation: "Bird's eye view of a pig's a**e outside the Rose and Crown on a moonlit night". Is the painting still there? Indeed does the pub still exist?
The Old Post Office
I have found this very postcard in an old photo album of my late aunt, although mine I think is older, and not c1955. I believe that she lived here and may have been the post mistress in the 1930's/40's. Her name was Dulcie Donovan. the ref. on the postcard is Frith TSD(or O) 6. I wonder if anyone there remembers her.
The Browns
First saw this house and street when I was a baby. Noads House was Mr and Mrs Browns house. It is still there in 2006 looking just the same!
The Kyte Family
I am researching my husband's family tree and have found out that his great-great-grandfather John Kyte was the innkeeper of The Black Horse Pub in 1901 (listed on the Census for that year). He was a widower at that time, his wife was Isabella (nee Neate). His son, Eglon Sylvanus Kyte, was my husband's great-grandfather. My husband's gran, Edith Naome Kyte, Eglon's a Edith's daughter, died in July 2010 in Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire, aged 103. I am looking for anyone who has memories of them or information to add. It would also be nice to know where they were buried as I have been to the church in Tilshead but have found no names on the gravestones to match.
Kite Family
I have read with interest that there are still Kyte's (Kite's) in Tilshead. I have been retyping a copy I have of the Kite (Kyte) family history compiled in the 1970's dating from the 1600's. My ancestor was George Kite who emigrated to South Australia with his family in 1840. George seems to be the first in his line to have changed the spelling of the surname from Kyte to Kite. My grandfather was a Kite.
George apparently led a very exciting life in Outback Australia and the history is facinating reading - I am honoured to have such an interesting lineage.
I live in Horsham in Victoria, Australia. I would love to hear from people in Tilshead who may be related.
History of Giddings Family
Would be interested to know if anyone has any knowledge of the history of the Giddings family. Have visited the church and graveyard where there are gravestones but would like to know more.
Thanks
Theresa

I lived in Tilshead from about the age of five until I was 12. My surname then was Cruse and we lived at West End. I have very fond memories of my life in Tilshead. I still write to Mrs Ruth Kyte and used to go to their Sunday School every week at the Baptist Chapel. We used to have outings and I can remember going to Greatwood camp with the Sunday School.
Me and my brothers used to spend a lot of our time playing up at the lodge, it was a great place to be, lots of space and trees and walks etc, although it is now closed off to the public because it is military land.
We used to attend the school summer fete every year and take part in the maypole dancing. Our teacher then was Mrs Davies who was lovely, she was quite strict but fantastic, I've heard since that she sadly died in a road accident. We used to have lots of dressing up... Read more
