The Crescent Tottenham

A Memory of Tottenham.

I lived at number 59 The Crescent for 10 years from when I was born until 1970 when we moved due to the road being demolished for the new estate that is there today. Our family name was Dobson and there was my Mum Joyce, Dad Bill, eldest sister Maureen, brother Robert, myself Susan and my younger sister Gillian, I have many fond memories of living in The Crescent but most of all I loved the fact that we knew a lot of our neighbours it was a very friendly road. There are many families that come to mind who meant a lot to me during my childhood here are just a few,
The Collins, The misons who had 10 children, The Banks, The Vanners, The Sadlers, The savages, and The Galloways. Even though I was only 10 years old when we left the crescent I can still remember a lot of the shops in the area like Tino's, Jones's where my Dad took me and my brother to buy our fireworks, the homemade sweet shop where you could buy a bag of crumbs for sixpence and I used to go round to a shop for my Mum on the high road called Rileys which was a general grocery shop, Mr Riley used to cut the cheese with the wire and pat the butter into a block lovely memories. At the top of the crescent was a bakers where a lady called Lesley worked, I can't remember if she owned the shop or not but she used to walk up and down The Crescent with 2 German shepherd dogs every day, then at the Tottenham high road end there was a launderette run by a lady called Wendy, us kids were always hanging around in there. We lived on the right hand side of the road if you were coming from Tottenham high road and we had what us kids called The bank at the back of our gardens, we used to climb over the fence and up the steep bank and it was like another world over there, it was a great expanse of land with long grass that stretched over to Plevana Cresent with the railway line in between we had many a summers day playing over there. Other places we used to go as kids was over to Springfield park where they had a swimming /paddling pool with a little hut to change in, The river Lea, The Muni swimming pool as we called it where I learnt to swim but my favourite was to Lordship rec bike park where you could hire a bike and go around a mini road system with traffic lights and zebra crossings ah those were the days. I can honestly say I loved my childhood in The Crescent and I hope some of the people and things I have mentioned bring back some memories for you.
