West Sussex memories
Memories
My memories of growing up in Cowfold are of going to school at St Peter's and walking through the churchyard to get there and back! Also the allotments at the back of the school. My mum used to make picnics for us to sit and eat in the playing field as we lived in Fairfield Cottages and I was never allowed to go on the big slide in the playing field as it was too high!
Memories For A Book About Hurstpierpoint
Hi I am going to take photographs around Hurstpierpoint for a small book. What are your memories? Can anyone recommend places in Hurst that will be good for pictures? Thanks for your time.
Looking For Family.
I have found a photo which was taken in 1962 of a young couple and a baby, all it says on the back of the photo is 'Sid with Gloria and Douglas'. Sid, I take it, is the baby. Then under the names it says 'Your son'. I found this photo in a bible in my uncle's house, his name being Stanley Johnson, who I think is the true father of the baby in the photo. I could be very wrong but I am so curious and excited to find out if I have a cousin. If this jogs a memory in anyone, please get in touch. Many thanks, Anne.
The George Inn - Sarah & Walter Welling
My ancestral relatives are listed in the 1881 Census as the proprietors of "The High Street George Inn" in Henfield.
Walter W Welling (aged 50) and his wife Sarah Ann Welling (nee Smoker and aged 52) were both licensed victuallers and were obviously running a "family" business!
Living with them (all Wellings) were 7 children:
Louis H (7 - scholar), Emma K (11 - scholar), Harold E (16 - pupil teacher), Walter W jnr ( 21 - working in the restaurant), Ada Blanche (17 - barmaid), Alice A (23 - barmaid), Llewellyn G (26 - coal merchant)
and one lodger - Walter Marten (42 - wholesale cabinet maker).
There were many other branches of this Welling family living and working in the area around Henfield, through Poynings, Fulking, Edburton and down to Shoreham and Brighton. More information available.
Lock Farm
My grandparents owned Lock Farm and I remember the adventures I had there exploring the house, and getting lost on the farm. I haven't been back to the area in many years, I know the house is still there and the farm was split up. My father loved the Green Man pub and we often had lunch there.... I wonder if anyone in the area remembers the Harvey family? Sally
Burgess Hill Swimming Pool
I might well be one of the kids in this picture! - In the early sixties we used to go there every day, dawn to dusk in the summer - Two sessions a day as I recall at thruppence a pop! - I am sure my mother thought it money well spent. Had my 'first kiss' in one of the buildings to the left of the pick - Jackie Aplin, where are you now?? - haha
1947 to 1955
I was born in 14 Church Road, the property above the jewellers. I lived in Burgess Hill until I was eight years old. I remember the open air swimmng pool and all the areas around the town which were fields. I started school at London Road School or Junction Road School as it was known. I remember the Salvation Army playing their music at the corner of Church Road every Sunday morning.
