Addlestone grew up in the mid 19th century with the arrival of the railway, when a few villas and many more terraces and pairs of artisan houses were built. The town was greatly augmented by 20th-century suburban housing, but architecturally it is the poor relation of Weybridge and Chertsey. Station Road, behind the photographer, is the main shopping street, and now has two major supermarkets. The station is to the left of the footbridge, which remains today; but the level crossing gates have been replaced by automatic barriers, and the villa went for blocks of flats.

I Remember This Photo Being Taken!
I am the boy in the foreground on a bike and in the background on a bike is my friend Tony. We were worried about the man staring at us, he had a big box and I guess a tripod. When we got home we said about it to our dads and later were told it was a man taking photos, others had also asked. Our family lived in Church Road from 1953 for, I believe, around 27 years.

I Was Born Close To The Station In 1953
I was born above Beston's Stationers' shop, Station Road in 1953. The shop is on the left hand side close to the crossing gate and the bus stop was outside. I attended St Augustine's C of E Primary School from 1957 to about 1960 when we moved to New Haw where I attended the old Primary School, long gone now, in Woodham Lane. Good Life
I was born in Addlestone down good old greenlane . I attend st pauls school until I left in 1969. I used to hang around crown cafe alot , there was never alot todo at night disco at the com center which always ended up with a fight .as I live in Woking moved far haven't I .I have seen many changes dukes head,magnet and Woburn hotel all pulled down for houses and the police station now gone also the co op now replaced ...see more

Growing Up In Addlestone
We first moved to Addlestone, (Derwent Close) in 1959, where I lived until joining the Army in 1973. Previously we had lived on Treetops caravan site on the Weybridge Road. I remember swimming and fishing in the mill pond at the end of Bournside Road many times. I loved living in Addlestone and have many fond memories. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
