Addlestone, The Wey Navigation c.1950

my memories hover around my grandmother's little general store at 106 New Haw Road, Does anyone remember it? She converted her front room into this small store and I had aunts and uncles living at 125 and 127 New Haw Road. I spent most of my time playing with my cousin Beryl Alexander at 125 and, with her friends, had many illicit adventures over many years! I was evacuated there from London during the war and attended the local junior school with Beryl and her entourage.

When we moved from Wales I lived at the fairly extensive Sayes Court Farm caravan park off Liberty Hall Lane, before we settled in Addlestone Park Ave (defined by the statues of knights at the top). I believe this to be the White Hart Lock at New Haw situated at the junction of Woodham Lane and the turning off over the White Hart bridge which led to Byfleet station. I do believe also that the cottage featured in a film, which I think was War Of The Worlds. This looks like the bridge over the canal at the Addlestone / New Haw border but I can't be sure. If it is I remember my parents taking us there (early 70's) to watch them put in new lock gates. The gates have the year engraved into them. I also believe that the lock keepers cottage, which I think is the house on the left, was used as a location for a film (about time travellers?).
