More about this scene

There has been a church at Altham since Norman times, and there may even have been a church there earlier. Altham was in a position of great importance to the De Lacey family, as it was on the route through to Clitheroe from Rossendale. Stones from the Norman church are preserved in the walls, and the font is Norman. The church was rebuilt in 1512, and major restorations were carried out in 1859, when the chancel was rebuilt and the tower and belfry were added.
