More about this scene

Looking west past the Memorial Gardens, the white building on the far hill, just to the left of the church tower, is Shardeloes, the Georgian mansion of the lords of the manor. Designed in the 1760s by the splendidly-named architect Stiff Leadbetter for William Drake, it replaced a 1630s house and was completed and decorated by Robert Adam. The Georgian stables and service buildings, designed by Francis Smith of Warwick and added to the 17th century mansion for Gerrard Drake in the 1720s, were retained by Leadbetter.

Hi I have lived in Amersham and Chesham Bois for the past 30 years and love the rich history of these places. I collect old postcards of this area and the Missendens, and I also research interesting people who have lived and worked here. I am particularly keen to hear memories of Chesham Bois in the first half of the 20th century, the Colenso family who lived in Elangeni House (on the ...see more
My name is Philip Hitchcock. I attended Amersham College 1956 to 1958. It was owned by Mr Holland (Boss). Another teacher was Mr Fuchs (Fred) an Austrian. Fred taught German, Maths, Science, and took charge of us at cricket. However I am not sure he knew the rules of the game! Boss attempted to teach the rest of the subjects. My preference was for Fred as he got me interested in Science, and I went on to ...see more
