My grandfather owned a house in Charthouse Road, Ash Vale. It was the last house on the left. My mother grew up in this house along with two brothers and two sisters until she was married. When the grandparents died my mothers brother took over the house and brought his family up. My sisters and I spent a lot of time visiting and staying for holidays. I had just a few weeks here, June/July 1955, in Mychett Hutments prior to Embarkation to Egypt and subsquently, Cyprus. This was the transit camp for the Royal Army Pay Corps. My husband recently took me on a trip down Memory Lane to Ash Vale. I am 76 years old and can remember everything so vividly, having been evacuated there during the war years. We lived in Balmoral Road and my mother became friendly with a Mrs Bugdale in Wharf Road (her house has been demolished, making way for Budgen's!).
