my dad Walter James Harrison lived in 2 Gold Cottages, the Stubbs i think on government road its where the fishing lakes are now. his dad Albert Edward Harrison died there in 1936. just trying to find out more about the place back in the day

RECOLLECTIONS OF ASH VALE

Ash Vale, viewed from the main route through it the Frimley and Ash Vale roads would not have appeared to alter a lot during the last 100 years. My grandfather owned a house in Charthouse Road, Ash Vale. It was the last house on the left. My mother grew up in this house along with two brothers and two sisters until she was married. When the grandparents died my mothers brother took over the house and brought his family up. My sisters and I spent a lot of time visiting and staying for holidays. I owned a terrace house in wharf road in the 1970"s.
Many properties have been demolished.On the corner of Balmoral Road is now a supermarket also there is a huge furniture shop where Tolleys garage once was
A parade of shops are on the opposite side of the road where the canal is.
It still remains a lovely village,although some would now call it a mini town.
I had just a few weeks here, June/July 1955, in Mychett Hutments prior to Embarkation to Egypt and subsquently, Cyprus. This was the transit camp for the Royal Army Pay Corps. My husband recently took me on a trip down Memory Lane to Ash Vale. I am 76 years old and can remember everything so vividly, having been evacuated there during the war years. We lived in Balmoral Road and my mother became friendly with a Mrs Bugdale in Wharf Road (her house has been demolished, making way for Budgen's!). I lived on Longacre estate. I was born in 1951 and stayed there until I was about 8/9 years old when my parents moved to Preston. My dad worked at the bakery in the village, and then for a milkman called Bill Bugden. My gran/grandad lived at canal villas, by the side of the canal. The building on the right hand side was owned by the Tuppers and is now the Swan pub/restaurant. Other than that, this picture is exactly how it looks now :)
