The Avebury Stone Circle in Wiltshire is unique: modern village life and ancient stones live side by side in a common and mutual existence where the past is indelibly a living part of the present. The massive circle of stones virtually encompasses the village; here, we can see the Red Lion pub (the white gabled building), the chapel on the right, and domestic thatched housing all inside a stone circle erected some 4,500 years ago.

Avebury is an interesting place to visit for history, archaeology and garden interests. My wife, Elizabeth, and I saw it on Sunday 24th April in bright hot sunshine when the stones are at their best; brilliantly reflecting sunlight and also casting dark shadows.
