I was born at the Duchess of Connaught Nursing Home in Bagshot in 1943 and my Mother remembered my Father paying a quick visit and being told off for hanging his Army coat on the door!

My father was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the Surrey Constabulary. We were moved from Coldharbour in Surrey to the police house in Bagshot. My father is Eric Shields and was the police Sergeant for Bagshot, Windlesham and Lightwater until his retirement in 1979. We lived in the police house (on the left side of the building) for a few years before moving to Millfield in Bagshot. I was pleased ...see more
I was born on the 5th January 1948 in the Duchess of Connaught Nursing Home, Bagshot, evidently I was the only girl in a room full of boys.
I don't remember, but I was born at this nursing home. I was the first child of Mavis and Ed Papworth, and I was born on 31st May, 1949. My brother Frank was also born at this nursing home 2 years and 9 months later. Both my brother and his family and myself and my family now live in Perth, Australia. I attended primary school at the old school, and I remember carrying desks from the old school to the new senior school (I believe it is now a middle school).
The house in the background is Pinewood, built by my great grandfather, Sir Howard Elphinstone, VC, KGB etc. He was one of the first soldiers in the Crimean War to win a VC. His VC is now in the Imperial War Museum. He was born near Riga, Latvia (then Livonia) in 1829. He was educated in Germany, before the family moved to Sidmouth. He joined the Royal Engineers and after the Crimean War, he was asked by Queen ...see more
My dad, Eric Berry, used to clip this hedge - BY HAND! When we're little, things always seem bigger than they really are, but my recollections of watching my Dad clip this hedge on the days he did the gardening at St Anne's church, were pretty accurate. It really is as big as I remember! I also recall going to St Anne's Hall ( a bit further back down the hill?) with my Mum, to collect our ration ...see more
I was born in 1947 (a home birth) in Grove End cottage which was, and still is, located pretty much across the London Road and railway line from the Cricketers pub. Although I've never been inside the pub, I have on occasion as a child, watched cricket with my Dad at the weekends. I notice on the satellite map that the cricket pitches are still there - the photo must have been taken on a day of play as ...see more
