More about this scene

Ballaugh is in the Sheading of Michael. The precise meaning of the word is unclear, but one possibility is that it is derived from 'skeid-thing', a Norse word for a local assembly of the freemen, who, when required, served in the king's longships for the defence of the island. Each of the island's six 'skeid-things' provided crews for four ships, thereby providing the king with sufficient crews for 24 warships.
