From 1964 I occasionally took the No. 691 bus from Ilford to Barkingside to shop. I used to buy my toddler son a Matchbox car from a toy shop. He didn't talk a lot but within a couple of years he could name most of the cars on the road and was particularly enamored of the car transporters that we saw on the Eastern Avenue. I lived in barkingside all my life I lived in colvin gdns I remember patricia moving to Australia with her brothers my mum looked after her when she was little l used to wheel her out in her pram I used to go to fairlop school and go to the state cinema often we all used to play in the street on our bikes and skates they were good days we lived next door to patricia I did not know she had returned to England I wish her well
Just looking at this photo brings back so many memories of shopping with my mum and two brothers.Getting chips on the way back from shopping or an icecream in Rossi's was a great treat. I went to school at Fairlop Primary & Secondary School until we emigrated to Australia in April 1967. I started work at the age of 15 years as 'the boy', apprentice mechanic at Mossford garage. I remember going down the High Street to Pither's bakeries to get ham and cheese rolls, as well as pies for the mechanic's tea breaks. The woman that used to serve me would always pop an 'extra' roll in for me, with a wink of an eye, with a whisper,"That's for you!". I also glimpsed at the girls that used to work in Boots ...see more
