More about this scene

As at Tipton and Wednesbury, the 30 ft seam of Thick Coal was near the surface at Bilston.Though there is evidence for coal pits at the time of Edward I, Bilston came into its own during the 19th century. In 1827 local mines produced an estimated 317,000 tonnes, and by the mid 1860s output was around 10 million tonnes. The population expanded from 6,900 in 1801 to 24,000 in 1861.

They were quite a treat in those frugal ...see more
My maternal grandfather, Thomas Mottram, owned The Hop Pole pub on Market Street - sold it in 1924. My paternal great grandfather, A E Webb, started a haulage company, centred at a house called Mendham, on Wolverhampton Street, which became Webb Bros. Any body remember these? My Aunt, Hilda Mottram was a primary school headmistress - not sure which one.
My Grandfather grew up in Hall Green street next to his Aunt, Uncle and 2 cousins, who later ran a grocery shop together down there. Irene and Olive Eliza Roberts, 49 & 50 Hall Green Street. Does anyone have any memories of them or their shop? Also does anyone have any memories of going to Sunday school at Bradley Methodist Church, down the road? My grandad said he won a book in Sunday so, and I am guessing it was ...see more
