Nostalgic memories of Blaenavon's local history

Share your own memories of Blaenavon and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born & bred in Blaenavon in 1966 till 1980, the year we sadly had to move. We lived at Lion Street, Avon Road then Riverside Drive in Blaenavon. I remember Avon Road & Riverside Drive; too young to remember Lion Street. My nan & gramps & dad lived in Elgam Avenue, also a few relatives. I loved living in Blaenavon, I remember the heavy & deep snow we used to have and the carnivals ...see more

I have been doing research on my family tree and found my greatgrandfather William G. Godfrey, was born 1865 in Blaenavon and lived on 48 King Street, in the 1880's. He was a minor and immigrated to the USA in 1889 with his dad John and mother Sarah. They had a lot of kids. Just wondering if there is still family over there.
Was top Belli's family related to Bert Belli, funny how we called it top Belli's when it was only a few doors from Berts. Did Aida from the Lion St. cafe, and the Belli family all come from Bardi? Has anyone read the poem by Henry Trew, We'll alll go back to Belli's? If anyone has a copy please copy it, I would love to read it. Thanks Mal
My Grandmother Abigail Owens was born in a street called Woodland, in Blaenavon. She is on the 1891 census aged 4 but there is not a house number. Many years later in 1944 my mother Thelma, Abigails daughter, stayed at 92 High Street for a short time with her baby son Bryan, to escape the bombs on London. The other people living in the house at that time were Rhoda and Fred with their son Norman. I'm wondering ...see more
I was born in 1946 and lived in Blaenavon until 1968. I went to St Felix Catholic School, and then to Park St S.M. I played rugby for Blaenavon Youth, Blaenavon R.F.C. and Forge Side R.F.C. I married Gaynor who was from Abergavenny. We then moved to Cwmbran where we had our two children. I worked for Girlings in Cwmbran before moving to their New Inn factory where I spent a total of 38 years. I now live in Griffithstown.
Most of my family started their days in Blaenavon, later moving to Glamorgan. The names I am interested in are, BELCHER, HOUSE, PREWETT, WILLIAMS. I would be grateful for any info or to hear from possible relatives.
