Agriculture was the dominant employer in the area, and this was often reflected in village life and facilities - note the tractor on the right of the photograph. Ancillary businesses included a newsagent, a butcher, a baker and the post office (where the white van is parked), as well as the builder R O Ayres, who proudly advertises his telephone number on his van (foreground) in the hope of attracting new customers. The tower of the church of St Mary Magdalene can be seen behind the houses on the left.

In 1957, having just completed my National Service I was living at home in Lindfield. Whilst looking for a permanent job, I had taken up a part time job at Haywards Heath Post Office. Each day for 6 days a week on reporting to H.H Post Office, I was driven out to Bolney Post Office with two others plus the mail.
