More about this scene

In Norman times, Bramber was an important port town. It was the seat of the De Braoses, with a mighty stone castle; but its keep of about 1100 is now merely a fragment, for the market and town migrated to nearby Steyning when the Adur silted up. Bramber decayed to a village, and its church, St Nicholas, built soon after 1066, also decayed. You can see Norman evidence here with the blocked arch into the long-demolished south transept from the tower, and also the doorway arch.
