More about this scene

Skelton Lane leads down through the commercial centre of Brotton. It is flanked on the right by a row of very old stone cottages that appear to lean to one side but nevertheless stand to this day - no doubt a testament to those who built them! The slip road on the left-hand side leads through to a grid-work of streets of Victorian houses, presumably built to house the miners who came to live in the area during the mining boom of the 1870s and 80s.

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I remember this view very well as my father was the pharmacist in the chemist shop which was just behind where this picture was taken .Also, in the same block was Bainses bakery and grocery store. I lived there from 1956 to 1963.
