Nostalgic memories of Goldthorpe's local history

Share your own memories of Goldthorpe and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in Bolton on Dearne in 1948; my grandfather was Guy Lewis the Goldthorpe chemist whose shop was in Doncaster Road. My grandparents lived in Market Street (number 5) Has anyone a photograph that might show the chemists shop? My grandfather retired about 1963. David Lewis
Does anyone have a photograph of the part of the main road where Mrs.Booth's shop was situated? Or perhaps the garage belonging to Mr. Booth? I think the shop was either between the Police Station and Sharp's fish and chip shop or on the row beyond the school, going towards where Sugdens was near the Zebra crossing. The garage was below the railway line going towards Highgate. A friend asked me if I knew of them, ...see more
Although I've spent most of my life living in Bolton-upon-Dearne I was born in Goldthorpe at number 9 Orchard Street. I had 3 brothers and 1 sister. I remember Little Harold (as they called him) who had a stall on the market. Another contributer remembers Tommy Hartley who had the shop on the bend of High Street. When I was young High Street was always full of cow pats from Moorheads cows, the farm was ...see more
Reg died recently in New Zealand where he lived since 1950's He was a child miner (14) in 1944 and I would like to collect a pit check or information of that time. He had fond memories of his life in Goldthorpe, he lived in Goldthorpe Road with his 7 other siblings. We visited there during the 1960's for the first time and continued to visit up to the 2000's when Reg developed Parkinsons. ...see more
My earliest memory of Bolton upon Dearne was as a 5 year old living at Manor Farm next to the bookies - I used to chalk up the results at the bookies. We had sheep on the farm and I remember a rather bad tempered ram which along with my brothers Robert and Neil, we would tease quite a lot. I went to the local junior school but not for very long because we moved to Lincolnshire, but I always remember Manor Farm. Friendly stoic people, Yorkshire through and through.
Looking at the comments and photographs of South Yorkshire and its then thriving industries, remembering the comradeship and dare I say "culture" of its people based on their community spirit and the so frequently mentioned facilities of the Miners' Welfare makes me, now at the age of 76, feel so, so, angry, especially when I hear politicians talking about being "all in it together" or needing to ...see more
Yes an old town with lots of my memories as we had the shop on Doncaster Road in the picture.
To be fair, from what I hear, Thurscoe was a nice place back in the day, but now there's fighting everywhere and Thurscoe is filled with a bunch of hard nuts. Cave woods is a good laugh though, it is the only place that is nice and peaceful, my great nanan's ashes are there.
My memories were of the club trips, they would have been a lot of people's holidays. Our dad would have been a member of at least four clubs so that meant we got a trip to the seaside, a bottle of pop and a packet of crisps, and the sick bucket if you couldn't travel well. I remember the pit sports days, coming from a big family it was like Christmas in July because I won a lot of races. I remember the matinee club ...see more
Ooh, I remember going to the Goldthopre Welfare Hall to see musicals staged there by the South Yorkshire Musical Comedy Society in the 1960s when they moved from their former home, the Mexborough Empire Cinema, in 1963, I think it was. I certainly remember seeing 'The Vagabond King', 'White Horse Inn','Chu Chin Chow', 'Rose Marie', 'Naughty Marietta' 'The New Moon' and 'South Pacific' there when Doreen Ward usually took the female lead. Happy memories.
