For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). This picture I believe was taken from Woodheads. You can compare it with an earlier photo of 1894 of 'Grange over Sands from Woodheads' (photo ref 34123). It is interesting to see that the land below Woodheads was still unbuilt upon at 1921 although a new house has appeared on what looks like Highfield Road. In 1908 the Woodheads Estate had land sloping down to Fernleigh Road and Kentsbank Road. I am ...see more
We were married here in 1994.
Is that Yewbarrow Lodge (the original one) in the background? Hit by incendiary bombs in 1941, and burnt badly. We used to play in the remains as children - Sadly SLDC didn't rebuild as per Colonel Porritt's wishes, and now although serving a great purpose as a nursing home, is a ghastly eyesore.
Showing the original Crown Hotel, and obviously pre the clock tower.
My Grandfather owned the K-shoes shop in Main Street - Albert Myers. I was born in 1970, and this is pretty much how main street looked while I was growing up, except the style of the cars!
I purchased this photo in a gentlemans clothes shop in Grange-Over-Sands as i believe the two children sitting on the wall could be my mum and uncle who were evacuated there during the second world war,so i wondering if the date could be later!?..The two children one at the front looks as if it could be my mum as she remembers having black plimsoles which is what they look like in the photo and the little girl has the ...see more
My Nan Was Matron of the Hampsfield as a child I would visit with my mum, it was such a beautiful place, the gardens were marvellous to be honest, Hong Kong gardens was my favorite with the Koi Karp, the ferns, when I was very small I thought that no one would be able to see me as I sat under a fern. About the house the dining room was all wood ...see more
Hi I have a very old postcard on the then N.E.C. Convalescent Home at Grange-Over-Sands, my father was there in or around the 1930's - he was there there quite a long time till he recovered from his illness. I wonder if it is still there, and if so have they made it into a hotel, or what ever as I would like to visit it this summer Yours sincerely Joyce Gregson
My Grandfather, Harry Dewhurst, was a partner/owner (I am not sure of the exact commercial position) of R & H Law (Main Street, Grange-over-Sands) in the 1950s. I remember R & H Law having all all four shop fronts as per this image. The shop sold carpets and furniture; including supplying carpets to local businesses. My late aunt told me that the Belsfield hotel in Bowness still has carpets supplied by my ...see more
My grandad convalesced here, James Taylor. He died in 1976. I hope to take my mum to see the place this year. I have 3 postcards of the place, one of the statue, the bowling green and the entrance drive.
