More about this scene
The attractive thatched house with the bow window supported by pillars dominates the centre of the village. The road on the right leads to the church, dedicated to St Mary and built between the 12th and the 15th centuries. The interior contains much Jacobean furniture, including a three-tier pulpit with a high tester. The Lord's Prayer is painted on the north wall. There are some interesting effigies, including one of a former crusader. Another effigy portrays a knight who probably fought in the Wars of the Roses, for the links of the chain attached to his armour are joined by the roses of York. Puddletown features in many of Thomas Hardy's novels as Weatherbury.
