Innes Family Holiday On The Farm.

A Memory of Ulgham Park.

During a holiday with Grandparents in the Newcastle area the family also went to Ulgham Park Farm to spend a long weekend with Dad's uncle, Ned Allen and his family. In the fields my sister and I 'helped' Dad and his cousins, Bob and Norman, place sheaves of wheat into stooks to dry. For lunch in the fields we had Aunties home baked pasties and fruit pie. I was only about eight or nine at the time. My arms were very scratched by the straw but we had a lovely time. I was allowed to ride the carthorse back to the farm, (my feet stuck out both sides as she was so wide - Rosie I think). I went with Dad's cousin Doris to look for brambles without much success but we did return with some mushrooms.
One evening the 'boys' and Doris took us, on the tractor trailer, to a Barn Dance in the village hall.
It was great fun for all ages. Sadly I don't have photographs as Dad destroyed most of the old snaps before moving from Scotland to London in the sixties. I am eighty now but maybe someone there remembers such events.
I understand the farm lay empty for a number of years and hope to visit the new housing development later this year.
