How Things Were

A Memory of Unsworth.

I remember walking through simister down cordy lane past warhurst farm on to pole lanepast the hills turn right up to back o the moss farm they had 50 cow's 100s ofpigs chickens Turkey's they grew potatoes and barely and Swedes in those days they had just started building the hillock estate I remember having to keep moving the electric fence has the building encroached more and more each week till in the end jack had to rent more land from Sherlock who owned brick house farm across from them was moss farm ran by the Jackson brothers they also milked cow's and grew crops further up was Sandfield farm owned by the Starkey who kept beef cow's next farm was hardies at bowlee milked about eleven cow's and had a milk round his dad had heywood farm in sinister and kept pigs the whole area was small working farms and small villages I remember the point on brothers who kept pigs at Egypt farm two lovely characters they used to collect their swill in the early morning from the university's in manchester it all changed when the motorway came I was draining on the moss and jack greenhalgh said to me thereto put a motorway through here every time I pass that spot in my car I smile and think back when the fields were full stooked corn and acres of potatoes how things change in a lifetime from a rural iydle to how it is today I took a walk down griffe lane recently I was saddened by all the rubbish that's been dumped in the hedgrows frank
