School Days
My first school was at Uplyme. I started when I was 4 which was nearly 54 years ago now. I remember the headmaster was a Mr Denham and he lived in a house on the top of the hill opposite the Church. I remember being quite scared of him. The teacher who I also remember with great fondness was a Mrs Hurst, she was a very kind and caring lady. I also remember that at Christmas we always held the Nativity Play inside the church.

RE: RE: School Days
That brings back memories - Mrs Etherstones Primary School, I started a few years after you and remember both Mr Denham and Mrs Hurst exactly as you described them. Mr Denham was very musical & I had to learn the violin for his music classes, which I hated & gave up as soon as I left. The Reverend 'Sammy' Searle took us for art classes & we did Country dancing on the small lawn up behind the school. Milk from those small milk bottles through a straw. On sports day (held on the village green/cricket ground) we were divided into 'houses' and mine was ARCHERS. I had a chum, Bob Tedbury (a farmers's son) & we were great rivals in the running races. Paddy Lawson was another mate, his father was Head Gardener for a Dr Mutch? who had the largest collection of Bamboo in Europe @ that time & a big house along from The Roost by the river, where Paddy & I spent many an hour building dams. Some other names I recall, Jenny Leech, Mike & Kathleen Battern, Phillip, Marie & Elizabeth Fowler, Clive Jenkins & Alastair Harris to name but a few. I lived at Marven House Hotel just up from the farm in Springhead Lane.

I remember Mr Denham being musical, I also had to learn the violin and he used to scare the life out of me. I never got it right and he used to shout at me, we also used to go to his house and watch nature and science programmes on the television. Sports Day was on the cricket field, we used to walk down the field from the school and line up to cross the road. I also remember Jenny Leech, she lived in Combpyne and was the vicar's daughter. The Fowler Family lived at Combpyne station, I think there was about seven children and for some reason I remember Alastair Harris. I used to have a friend called Ruth who lived down the Glen in Uplyme and I stayed there once but I didn't like the trees blowing and had to be taken home. Strange the things you remember, isn't it .

Truly, it was a more innocent age! Mrs Ethelstone's school is still there - I passed it when on holiday last year - but it's a lot larger now. The old Village Hall has been replaced, and there's only one pub left, but essentially the village is much the same. And Mr Denham's ('Daddy Denham') son John is now a Cabinet Minister - who would have thought that? Back then the school was excellent, with the Vicar - Sammy Searle - teaching us French and Art (he was a very talented artist), and I seem to recall only 2 or 3 classes. A fantastic childhood, which I remember well. I think I was in Archer House too, competing against Dragon House.
